3D-printed ultrasound cast design wins 2014 Golden A’Design Award

The Osteoid, a custom 3D-printed ultrasound cast designed by Deniz Karasahin, has been awarded the 2014 Golden A’Design Award in the 3D-printed forms and product design category.

The creative design allows for the circulation of air around the skin under the cast. This is unlike conventional casts, which are more like solid sleeves covering the entire surface of the skin and promote itching and unpleasant odors to occur underneath. As the skin underneath the cast is accessible, the Osteoid’s design allows for low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) treatment to occur. There are some studies that show LIPUS can improve bone healing.
