How effective are water filters?

What contaminants does a water filter remove? See for yourself, but be prepared for a shock!

Water filters are ideal methods of purifying water and making it safe for drinking. There are more than 300 chemicals and pollutants in water classified based on their nature. The best water filters, particularly faucet water filter, can remove up 99 percent of these contaminants. The following are the types of contaminants that can be removed when the ideal type of water filter is used:

• Volatile Organic Chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals. These contaminants can be found in most ground water sources due to contamination and agricultural run-off. Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) can cause damage to kidneys, liver, the reproductive system, and other areas of the body. This is why purifying your water with the most efficient water purifier is essential. An effective water filter can eradicate these chemicals completely and make your water safe for drinking.

• Heavy metals: Metals are found underground and it is normal to find some pieces in our drinking water. These metals get in contact with the ground water before being collected and transported. Metals like mercury and lead are very harmful to the body and it is important to filter your water properly to remove these substances. Some of them are very tiny and cannot be easily seen. But a complete water filter will remove them and keep your water completely safe.

• Endocrine disrupting chemicals: these are chemicals that interfere or mimic the normal hormones in the body. They are found in water and are known to affect humans as well as animals. Endocrine disrupting chemicals cannot be eradicated through boiling or distillation, or through chlorine application. The most effective way to remove them is by the use of a water filtering device.

• Debris and other substances. Before water passes into taps, it moves through different environment and various stages. Debris and other particles can easily contaminate the water and make it unsafe for drinking. But with the use of a water filter, these particles can be totally eradicated from the drinking water. But not all devices are very effective at removing debris. Water filters such as the faucet filters can be counted upon to do the work.

Water filtration is very effective in removing the above contaminants but most effective in keeping other beneficial nutrients like some minerals in water. Water filter is equally effective at removing organic materials from water. Organic elements are composed of hydrogen and carbon. These chemicals are mainly responsible for color, odor, and taste problems. Some water filters are used to improve aesthetically objectional water.

Some other water filters like faucet water filter can remove some organic chemicals that may be harmful if allowed in water. These chemicals include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyls, halogenated hydrocarbons (industrial solvents), pesticides, and trihalomethanes. Radon gas can equally be removed in some type of filtration processes and the amount of this gas that could be removed differs from device to device. Contamination of water may likely not be treated or detected in unregulated water systems. But using an effective water filter for water purification will most certainly take care of the problem.
