What is ILGA-Europe?

ILGA-Europe is the European region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

ILGA-Europe in a brief

  • ILGA-Europe is the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Intersex Association
  • ILGA-Europe works for equality and human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans & intersex (LGBTI) people at the European level
  • ILGA-Europe is an international non-governmental umbrella organisation bringing together 407 organisations from 45 of the 49 countries in Europe
  • ILGA-Europe was established as a separate region of ILGA and an independent legal entity in 1996. ILGA was established in 1978
  • ILGA-Europe advocates for human rights and equality for LGBTI people at the European level, before organisations such as the European Union (EU), the Council of Europe (CoE) and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
  • ILGA-Europe strengthens the European LGBTI movement by providing trainings and support to its member organisations and other LGBTI groups on lobbying, advocacy, fundraising, litigation, organisational development and communications

  • ILGA-Europe is a member of Social Platform, the largest civil society alliance fighting for social justice and participatory democracy in Europe
  • Since 1997 ILGA-Europe enjoys participative status at the Council of Europe

Our achievements

ILGA-Europe was established as a region of ILGA in 1996, and since then the organisation has been engaged in extensive activities aimed at promoting LGBTI rights through the principal European institutions together with our member organisations.

Our history

In this section you will find details on ILGA-Europe history year-by-year since ILGA-Europe was established in 1996. We sincerely thank Kurt Krickler, Vera Cîmpeanu and Gerhard Grühn who put together all these facts and summarised all important achievements and events and organised a fascinating display during ILGA-Europe anniversary 10th annual conference on 26-29 October 2006 in Sofia.
