More “Hey, Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobbering Time!!!” Appreciation
I’ve written in the past about the coolness of Stephen Gettis’ art site, “Hey Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobbering Time!,” but it was long enough ago that it could not hurt to plug it again!
If you don’t recall the original post, the concept of the site is that Gettis asks various comic book artists to draw their favorite fictional characters and/or favorite authors.
The results are amazing.
Read on for a couple of samples from artists who have done new pieces since the last time I talked about the site! And heck, try to guess who is being depicted!
First, here are two fictional characters, drawn by Bruce Timm and Bill Sienkiewicz (who I just realized actually wrote the name of his character on his drawing – oops)…
Next, here are two authors, drawn by Stan Sakai and Philip Bond…
Finally, in honor of the late, great Dick Giordano, here’s a Dracula piece Giordano did for Gettis…

The Timm piece is Gully Foyle from The Stars My Destination (also known as Tiger! Tiger!) by Alfred Bester. Howard Chaykin also did an adaptation of the novel that was split into two volumes (though I’ve only ever seen the first volume.) It was a gift from my father who had been a fan of the novel when it first came out in the 1950s. I’d venture that Bester is a gigantic influence on Chaykin’s science fiction work. Of course, Bester is also wrote a lot of golden age Green Lantern.

I had no idea Alfred Bester wrote comic books!
Well, other than Dracula, I don’t know who any of these are. Offhand, I can’t even think of any famous Japanese authors.

Bester wrote for DC back in the ’40s, before he switched to writing for radio. He mostly wrote for Green Lantern and Superman (he’s sometimes credited as the author of the Green Lantern oath, but he denied it.) He created a lot of the GL rogues gallery: Solomon Grundy is one of his better known creations. Also wrote the Phantom and Mandrake the Magician.
He’s sadly not as well known as other science fiction authors of the same generation, in part because he wasn’t as prolific as his contemporaries, but he was arguably the best of the bunch.
