Bare Necessities
Entrepreneur and creative director Daniel Eckler wanted to peek into the bags of different creative professionals from around the world. The idea behind this seemingly voyeuristic exercise was quite simple: the constituents of each bag is characterised by its owner’s needs and profession, and these inanimate items can help delineate someone’s unique, personal story.
To understand the contents of the bags of 100 different professionals, Eckler floated a photo series called Essentials, and reached out to designers, editors, bloggers, art editors and photographers from all over. “The diversity and creativity in the submissions were incredible; be it Amanda Cole’s illustration or Maciej Tajber’s exploding purse,” Eckler told Guardian20. “It was really inspiring to see people do more than just arrange things neatly, although a lot of those images are beautiful as well.”
Each picture contains a bag, along with its contents neatly arranged on a flat surface. A cursory glance at different pictures reveals a few recurring common items such as laptops and phones. However, a closer look at the contents reveals items spanning a wide range: playing cards, rulers and measuring tapes. “I also love how much of someone’s personality comes through in the items they choose, the arrangement and the photo,” says Eckler. “You really get an insight into who these people are, and what’s important to them.”
