SPHL Approves RiverHawks’ Move To Macon, GA For 2015-2016 Season

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (June 25, 2014) – The Southern Professional Hockey League today announced the move of the Augusta RiverHawks to Macon, GA, who will return to the ice for the 2015-2016 season as the Macon Mayhem.

At a press conference held this morning at the Macon Marriott City Center Hotel, league president Jim Combs announced the SPHL Board of Governors this week approved the team’s move to Macon.

“It’s great to have ice hockey back in the Middle Georgia, Macon Area,” said team owner Bob Kerzner. “Working with the folks from the management company, the Marriott as well as the City Council has truly been an excellent experience.”

“I especially wish to thank Kevin Dowdell from the Marriott for starting this entire process as well as the Mayor and City Council for making this a seamless process,” Kerzner continued. “We truly hope that bringing SPHL hockey back to Middle Georgia is something folks in the area are looking forward to.”

“We are very excited about the SPHL’s return to Macon,” added Combs.

The Augusta RiverHawks were forced to suspend play following the 2012-2013 season after the ice system at James Brown Arena failed and the team was forced to play its final eight home games at their practice facility.

The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), now in its 11th season of play, will have eight teams taking the ice this October:

The two-time defending President's Cup Champion Pensacola (FL) Ice Flyers, Columbus (GA) Cottonmouths, Fayetteville (NC) FireAntz, Huntsville (AL) Havoc, Knoxville (TN) Ice Bears, (Lafayette) Louisiana IceGators, (Southaven) Mississippi RiverKings and Peoria (IL) Rivermen.
