Library Services & Information

  • Loans & Borrowing
    The Loans service remains a primary Library service, with over a million items you can borrow.
  • Opening Hours
    Opening hours for the University of Southampton Library's sites.
  • Library Enquiry Services
    You can make enquiries in person, by phone, email or by completing a web form. You can also use our live webchat service (10:00 - 17:00, Monday - Friday).
  • Library Deskside Training
    Information and online booking from for the Library Deskside Training service.
  • Course Collections
    The Course Collections contain stock in high demand such as course books, articles and lecture notes. Many items are now available online.
  • Inter-Library Loan / Document Delivery Service
    The inter-library loans service (ILL) sources items not available from our own stock and makes them available to our readers.
  • Accessibility and the Library
    We aim to make our resources and services accessible to all Library users. Please do not hesitate to contact Library staff should you need assistance in using the Library or wish to discuss individual requirements.
  • Library Digitisation Unit
    The Unit specialises in the digital capture of images and texts from a range of document types. Using high-end scanning equipment, state-of-the-art workflow software and with extensive staff experience, preservation quality digital files are generated.
  • Library Membership
    Use of the Library by Alumni, affiliates, SCONUL Access and members of the public.
  • Study Areas
    We have a range of study areas throughout our sites, including dedicated group study rooms at the Hartley, Health Services and National Oceanographic Libraries.

Library Sites

  • Archives & Special Collections website
    The Hartley Library’s Special Collections include the Anglo-Jewish Archives, Wellington Papers, Broadlands Archive, rare books and printed collections such as the Parkes Library and Cope Collection.
  • Avenue Library
    The Avenue Library is an undergraduate collection for students at the Avenue Campus. In addition to course books, there is also a substantial collection of films that you can watch in the library.
  • Hartley Library
    The Hartley Library is the single largest site, supporting all academic units based at the Highfield Campus - and it has the longest opening hours (07:00 to midnight most days of the year).
  • Health Services Library
    The Health Services Library supports University staff and students based at Southampton General Hospital. It also provides services and resources to NHS staff at UHS and Solent NHS Trust.
  • Language Resources Centre
    The Language Resources Centre is open to all students and staff of any level, who want to either learn a language as a beginner or at any point in their language learning.
  • National Oceanographic Library
    The National Oceanographic Library is a dynamic service. This guide will tell you more about the resources and services we offer to support learning, teaching and research at the National Oceanography Centre.
  • Winchester School of Art Library
    The Winchester School of Art Library is a specialist art and design library supporting education and research. Resources include Archives, Artists books, Exhibition Catalogues and the Knitting Reference Library.
