Llys y Fran, 29kW Hydro Scheme Refurbishment, SW Wales

Client: Dwr Cymru/United Utilities
Completion: June 2008
Objectives

To refurbish, fully automate and grid connect the existing hydro scheme at Llys y Fran reservoir.

Work Undertaken

Llys y Fran reservoir is located near the Preseli mountains in Pembrokeshire. The exisitng hydro scheme commissioned by Gilkes in the early 1970s was under utilised and was running a few small heaters within the reservoir tower.

Under a framework agreement with Dwr Cymru/United Utilities, Dulas carried out a feasibility study and subsequent work to refurbish and automate the hydro plant to give full grid connection.

Site Specific Issues

The main issues dealt with were working on an operational site with an obligation towards delivering water for treatment, whilst making sure that compensation flows were not affected.

In Conclusion...

The project has been a great success and the scheme has proved to be operating reliably and automatically non-stop, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, producing on average a 26kW output.

We’re very pleased with the work Dulas have done transforming a 30 year old turbine into a fully up-to-date machine.
