Funding: Financial assistance is available for all students enrolled in the program, in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. In 2012-2013, teaching assistantships will provide $11,272 – $11,640 for one-third time (two sections of class per year) and $16,908 – $17,460 for one-half time (three sections per year). Research assistantships offer stipends of $8464 one-quarter time (approximately 10 hours of work per week). The Workshop awards $17,460 Teaching-Writing Fellowships to a number of second-year students. A number of one- and two-year non-teaching fellowships are available to incoming students, such as the Truman Capote Literary Trust, which provides six $16,000 fellowships to first year students, plus tuition remission. The other fellowships range from $12,000 to $18,500; complete tuition remission is included with most of these.
Training: Teaching assistantships of 2-3 sections per year are granted to graduate students. In addition, graduate research assistants work for a variety of creative writing-oriented projects and departments at the University of Iowa, such as The Iowa Review, the University of Iowa Press, and the International Writing Program.
