Overview
This page provides national and regional data on the number of new housing units authorized by building permits; authorized, but not started; started; under construction; and completed. The data are for new, privately-owned housing units, excluding "HUD-code" manufactured (mobile) homes. The data are from the Building Permits Survey, and from the Survey of Construction (SOC), which is partially funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Local building permit data may be found on the Building Permits Survey webpage.

Announcements
Final annual estimates for 2013 of housing units authorized by building permits for the U.S. and by Census Region, Census Division, state, metropolitan area, county, and permit-issuing place are now available. Monthly unadjusted revisions for 2013 for the U.S. and Census Regions; and seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2012 through March 2014 for housing units authorized by building permits will be released with the April 2014 New Residential Construction release on May 16, 2014.
The U.S. Census Bureau updated its application programming interface (API) with monthly and quarterly economic indicators. The API allows developers to combine Census Bureau statistics with other data sets to create tools for research on a variety of other topics.
