Geim arbeitete u.a. an Universitäten in Nottingham, Nijmegen, Manchester und in Kopenhagen.

Sir Andre Konstantin Geim a taśmy Gecko

Grafeny to dwuwymiarowe kryształy atomów węgla. Geim pracował m.in. na uniwersytetach w Nottingham, Nijmegen, Manchesterze i Kopenhadze.

Nagroda Ig Nobla jest czasem określana mianem anty-Nobla i jest to satyrycznym wyróżnieniem dorobku naukowego, który sprawia, że "ludzie najpierw są rozśmieszeni, a potem dopiero się nad jakimś zagadnieniem zastanawiają" (to honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think).

Sir Andre Konstantin Geim and gecko tape

Sir Andre Geim Konstantin is a physicist who was awarded together with Konstantin Novoselov for his work on graphene with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. Graphene are two-dimensional crystals of carbon atoms. Geim worked among all at universities in Nottingham, Nijmegen, Manchester and Copenhagen. He is currently director of the Manchester Centre for Nanotechnology. Geim has also the Dutch and British citizenship.

One of his remarkable discoveries became known as "gecko tape" in the UK press. Also known are his experiments with diamagnetic levitation technology that were presented with help of a so-called "floating frog". For this, he was awarded the so-called Ig Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000. He is the only person who was awarded with both Nobel and Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobel Prize is sometimes referred to as an anti-Nobel Prize, and it is a satirical award to to honor scientific achievements did first make people laugh, and then make them think.

Until the time of the attack of Nazi Germany on the Soviet Union in 1941, his father was a teacher of mathematics and physics at the University of Saratov. Due to the political issues and the ethnic origin of the Russian-German family, both father and grandfather of Geim spent many years in a Siberian gulag and were forced to work there.
