Dog Unfriendly: 12 Places with Breed Bans

breed bans pit bullAlthough breed-specific legislation (BSL) has not proven to be effective anywhere it’s been enacted, and is opposed by President Barack Obama and most major animal welfare groups, some cities, states and countries around the world continue to enforce breed bans.

So, if your dog is a Pit Bull (or just looks like one) – or if you’re opposed to what’s been called “breedism” – you should avoid visiting the following places. While banned breeds traveling through may be exempt, there still may be special restrictions for your dog, such as wearing a muzzle or staying inside a crate.

Most of these bans apply to American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and dogs that look like these breeds.

North America

  • Denver – The state capital of Colorado, considered to have the toughest BSL laws in the U.S., has banned Pit Bulls since 1989. Bans are also enacted in the Colorado cities of Aurora and Castle Rock.
  • Miami – Pit Bulls are banned throughout Miami-Dade County.
  • Sioux City, Iowa – One of dozens of cities in this state that bans Pit Bulls. Some cities also ban Rottweilers.
  • Independence, Mo. – Pit Bulls are not welcome in the hometown of President Harry S. Truman, who once said, “You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog.” (There is no breed ban in Washington, D.C.). More than 30 other cities in Missouri have similar bans.
  • Pawtucket, R.I. – While the name of this town near Providence sounds dog friendly, Pit Bulls are not allowed. There’s also a ban in Central Falls.
  • Yakima, Wash. – This town, which won the All-America City Award in 1994, is not at all for Pit Bulls. Eleven other Washington cities also ban the breed.
  • Canada – Pit Bulls are banned throughout the province of Ontario and in Winnipeg, Manitoba (which also bans Dogos Argentino).
  • Bermuda – This popular tourist destination bans Pit Bulls as well as Akitas, several Mastiff breeds and Australian Dingos.

UK and Europe

  • United Kingdom – Breed bans are enforced in Great Britain, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Germany – Naziism is thankfully gone, but breedism still exists in Deutschland. Bull Terriers are also banned in this country.
  • Norway – The Land of the Midnight Sun is not the land of the Pit Bull – or the Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Dogo Argentino.
  • Denmark – Danes are not so great when it comes to allowing Pit Bulls, or Boerboels, Kangals, Tornjaks and a few Shepherd breeds.

Be aware that Pit Bulls are also banned on all U.S. military bases. For a complete list of cities, states and countries with breed bans, visit Understand-A-Bull.

The Dog Park

I've run into several not so dog friendly hotels in Escanaba, Michigan. I feel the best way to voice your opinion about it is to just not patronize these Hotels. Tell your animal friendly friends to do the same and if you have the chance. Let the local newspaper know what is going on and what you are doing about it.

Only the City of Winnipeg within the province of Manitoba has BSL.
