Danny Hakim

Danny Hakim has been the European Business Correspondent at The New York Times since August 2013.

Previously, Mr. Hakim served as the Albany bureau chief for The Times, the head of the paper’s Detroit bureau, and a reporter covering investing. His stories for The Times have taken him to an Indiana camp for Hummer aficionados, to the Michigan hunting preserve of the rock guitarist Ted Nugent and into the deep thicket of General Motors’ financial statements and the New York State budget.

In 2011, Mr. Hakim and a Times colleague, Russ Buettner, collaborated on a series of articles called “Abused and Used” that focused on abuse, neglect and deadly mistakes in New York’s system of caring for developmentally disabled people.

In April 2012, the series was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The Pulitzer board said the series “revealed rapes, beatings and more than 1,200 unexplained deaths over the past decade of developmentally disabled people in New York State group homes, leading to removal of two top officials, movement to fire 130 employees and passage of remedial laws.”

Mr. Hakim was part of a team that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News for its swift and sweeping coverage of the sex scandal that resulted in the resignation of Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

Before coming to The Times in 2000, Mr. Hakim was a financial reporter for SmartMoney.com and a police reporter for The Greenville News in South Carolina.  He started his career as a copy aide at The Washington Post.

Born in Norfolk, Va., on March 10, 1971, Mr. Hakim graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

Mr. Hakim is married with two children and lives in London.
