Captain America 2 Interview: Scarlett Johansson Talks ‘Black Widow’ Solo Film

Published 3 months ago by

Introduced in Iron Man 2 as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, revealed as a spy with a shady past in The Avengers, and returning for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age of Ultron has a key team member for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Black Widow has become the leading female superhero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Scarlett Johansson is a scene-stealer in her latest outings as Natasha Romanoff and ever since her intro, there’s been talk from Marvel’s high-ups that Black Widow could be a character that spins off into her own headlining role. In a time where are four or more superhero films per year hitting theater, none of them with female heroes as the lead – and no current plans for a female-led Marvel movie – the timing might be right.

Don Kaye had the chance to chat with Johansson on behalf of Screen Rant about her role in Captain America 2, returning as a supporting character in another hero’s film and the potential of Black Widow becoming a solo feature.

Scarlett Johansson Pregnant What does this mean for The Avenger Captain America 2 Interview: Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow Solo Film

-

Going into this film, what did you want to see happen with Black Widow and how did that line up with what Marvel and the writers and directors had in mind?

Well, you know, more than anything, I didn’t know how the Widow fit in with Captain America. I mean, you know, we’ve seen a little bit of their relationship kind of blossoming in “Avengers,” but you know, in mind these characters didn’t really have much in common. You know, I didn’t want to just be kind of thrown into this movie because, “Oh, it was a part of this franchise and we need to fill this in.” It needed to make sense obviously. And, you know, I think what we worked really hard on and what we found was actually this kind of commonality between the two characters. I mean, they come funnily enough from kind of opposite ends of the moral spectrum in some ways. But there’s a certain kind of, I think a – I think that they are both characters that have no tolerance, you know, for kind of “the lie.” I mean, they both – even though the Widow is certainly part of the lie in many ways and maybe Cap doesn’t totally buy into that for himself, neither one of these characters want to feel like they’re being lied to. And, you know, they very much want to get to, like, the core of the truth. You know, they also both have this kind of wall that they sort of put up, you know, to keep themselves from really letting anybody else in, and you know, these are different themes in the relationship that I really wanted to kind of explore or use or uncover, you know, so that it made sense for the Widow to be in this installment, and I think it works really well.

Was it nice to get her out of the suit and into street clothes and have some different looks?

I think it’s nice in this film to see the Natasha of Black Widow. I mean, you know, you see her and you go, “Wow, this is a person who gets ready in the morning. This is a person who has a personal life outside of work” – you know, who knows how much of a personal life that is, but she’s got an identity outside of this job which I think makes her much easier to relate to, much more sort of interesting and enigmatic is that there’s this whole other life that exists for her. And you know, I hope that, you know, the audience wants to scratch away at that as much as I enjoy doing it because we’ll see even more of that in “Avengers 2” and, you know, part of that of course is even getting her out of the suit, you know, and see that she’s got her own thing going on.

There’s been a lot of buzz and talk about a possible Black Widow film. Would you like to see that happen at some point down the line – maybe before “Avengers 3”?

You know, there’s always the possibility in this kind of Marvel madness that, you know, anything could happen, and a lot of these spin-offs are really like fan-driven, you know, kind of audience-driven, which is great because if the audience wants it, then you know that it’s built in in a way and people are excited to see it. Not feeding them they’re not into. So if the audience wants something like that and we could really, you know, carve out a great story for her that’s a continuation of what we already know, then I’d be totally for it. I mean, she’s definitely got –the material is there, you know, and I’m, you know, I’m always willing to slip the suit back on and power through it, you know, if people want to see it.

Hoping to see Black Widow return for Captain America 3 after seeing her team with Steve Rogers? Does a S.H.I.E.L.D. team-up with Black Widow and Hawkeye interest you? Should Black Widow be the first female hero to get a solo film? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Ok …I love ScarJo, but the girl sure does like to say “you know” allot. I counted it 25 times in just the 3 paragraphs they showed from the interview. Anyway, I think a Black Widow movie would be awesome, but I think it would have to be more of a “origins” type movie, you know. ;)

    • You know, I think you’re right, she does say that alot. As far as a solo movie goes, of course I would watch one and buy the DVD, but frankly I do not think she really can carry a movie alone. Don’t get me wrong, she is just fine as a supporting character, but I think there are other more important heroes to get up and launched and do movies about. I would rather remain primarily focused on these bigger goals and not side-tracked off onto a little trunk road on the big highway through the Marvel Universe.

    • The Alot is Better Than You at Everything:

      ;)

    • She TALKS!?!?! Who knew?

  2. Yes! Make it happen Marvel!

  3. how many times can she say “you know” on an interview? lol

    • …..you know…I lost count…you know?

    • (Singing): “Do you know–you know–where you’re going to–you know–Do you like the things–you know–that Life is showing you–you know?”

(Singing): “No no no no–you know–I can’t take it no more–you know–I’m tired of waking up on the floor–you know!”

    • Aha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Only the Shadow you-knows for sure!!!

  4. Before seeing Cap 2, I’d have been all for a solo BW movie.

After seeing it, I think I’d prefer if she remained a supporting character with a mysterious past that comes out over subsequent movies. A solo film could potentially expose her character (settle down, fellas) and leave little to like or be interested in when she talks forlornly about her past because we’ll know what she’s talking about.

Then again, I’m one of those rare people who seems to not want to be told and explained every tiny detail.

    • Right there with you. I like that they are using her as a supporting character, and revealing some of her history in CA:TWS and really diving into her backstory with Avengers: AOU. I would be down for a solo BW film after the MCU is flushed out a little more with minor characters and story beats they could potentially use.******* CA:TWS MINOR SPOILER and even then it really isn’t ***** Have her and other trusted characters (Hawkeye, Sam, WM, etc) hunt down the remaining WinkWinkra loyalists still operating within BLANK or whatever replaces it. I guess that all depends on what happens in AOU, though.

  5. She can say and do whatever she wants as far as I’m concerned.

Seriously though she’s right on how Widow had a more confident. assured personality in Winter Soldier. She had a confidence and swagger that it could argued Steve Rogers lacked. There was definitely enough impression there to convince that a solo Widow movie could work. Marvel will at some point need to try and introduce a female led franchise. and Widow’s already appeared in 3 soon to be 4 movies. Plus she has a whole backstory yet to be fully explored. Plus ScarJo kicking ass in a black tight costume is enough to bring in the box office.

So it’s a no brainer really.

  6. Black Widow is one of my favourite Marvel characters and I would love to see a solo movie, but I’d rather have a Ms. Marvel movie first.

And yes, the amount of you knows is ridiculous.

  7. I’d watch anything marvel throws at me lol

  8. Marvel better hustle. Coz ScarJo isn’t getting any younger

    • She’s still in her 20s!

      • She’s 29 with a baby on the way.

If Marvel finally green lights a BW movie for Phase 4, ScarJo will be in her mid/late 30s.

Let’s face it, Phase 3 movies are either gonna be CA3, Doc Strange or Thor 3.

        • unlike RDJ who landed his first Iron Man movie when he was only 23, right?

  9. Yes!

Can we get Tarantino to do it.

    • +1

    • + 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

  10. Lol, yeah, they will have to find a replacement in about 20 years.

They might need to start scouting preschools pretty soon.

    • That was a reply to Marvelboy. I hit the reply button so not sure why it did not post under his comment.

      • Haha, no worries Chris

  11. seriously you guys need to stop using that poster for Scarlett i am having trouble reading the articles…mad distractions

    • Ha, I didn’t even know there was words. I just ogled the picture for 15 minutes and then stumbled on this comment section.

  12. Just wondering, have you guys noticed that the audio from you latest interviews has been extremely off set to the right? Other than that keep up the good work guys.

    • *to the left

  13. I just hope they don’t make her a villain like in Ultimates.

  14. I’d rather a see a pair-up movie with Widow and Hawkeye than solo films for either. It just seems like the right way to go.

  15. She’s a goddess but totally annoyed me how many times she uses the phrase “you know” suppose it really would’nt when its live !!

  16. Honestly, she’s great as a supporting role. She’s a spy, not a star. Inherently, she’s supposed to hang out in the background and do most of her damage off-screen, much in the way Nick Fury does.
What the next major occurrence in her storyline should be is a (romantic?) link between her and the future Daredevil character that is going to be unveiled on Netflix. But judging from Marvel’s reluctance to TRULY crossover into TV, that may not ever happen.

  17. My only concern of a BW film is her characterization. Not ScarJo’s acting. I personally am not a fan of the female bond agent stylization that they’ve been portraying in the films, and would definatley like to see a lot more double agent spy action, because I like that it’s hard to trust her. But hey? Her own solo film would be a great place to explore that more! I’m not a huge fan of ScarJo, but I do think she can act, it’s just the way they’ve characterized Black Widow I think is the reason people aren’t bigger fans of her as BW.

  18. I would love for Scarlett to be in a Black Widow movie, although for the 1st one, she would definitely need a familiar assemble cast to support her (Cap, Nick, Hawkeye, etc.).

  19. Not sure if a standalone Black Widow movie would do it for a general audience but wouldn’t mind seeing more of her in Cap films. Don’t want them to spread these characters thin. Loved the Winter Soldier!

  20. A solo BW movie?? HELLS YEAH! :DDDD I love the Black Widow. She’s my favorite character! And I would love to finally figure out her past!!!!

  21. Would love to see a movie dedicated just to black widow!

  22. I love to see BW in a solo movie but it will be really necessary to have some other superheroes to have that movie more fx, coz we all know that widow is not a superhero, she’s a super agent :P

  23. I would LOVE to see a Black Widow movie where she was the main character! Why do we only have male superhero movies? I love what Scarlett Johansson brings to the character, and I think she could pull off a movie as the main star.

Notice how its the women posting favorable comments, yes give us a Black Widow movie, and its the men who say, no? Sexism anyone? Especially comments about age and having children. Its the old double standard and it stinks.

Give us a Black Widow movie!

    • I couldn’t agree with you more, on all of your points. And it really, really is time for a strong (both emotionally and physically) female superhero to get some screen time!

  24. It would be great for Scarlett Johansson to have a solo movie as Black Widow. Plus, how long could her unknown past be hidden. Scarlet Johansson does say you know many times. Maybe that’s her way of talking. We shouldn’t judge her by the way she’s talking. Well, I hope ther’ll be a Black Widow solo movie.

  25. Oh PLEASE do film a movie about the Black Widow! Scarlett Johansson does a great job as the character, and as many have said before me, Romanof has an interesting history to explore. Besides, it’s about damn time that we have a kickass female superhero! I mean, come on, it’s 2014 – get on it already! And it’s really quite infuriating that most female characters in superhero movies do nothing else but walk around looking sexy, being saved or simply act as an uninteresting love interest. Bring on Black Widow, I say!
