When a South African botanist Lyall Watson claimed in 1973 that plants had emotions that could be recorded on a lie detector test, he was dismissed by many in the scientific community.

However, new research, published in the  journal Trends in Plant Science, has revealed that plants not only respond to sound, but they also communicate to each other by making “clicking” sounds.

Using powerful loudspeakers, researchers at The University of Western Australia were able to hear clicking sounds coming from the roots of corn saplings.

Researchers at Bristol University also found that when they suspended the young roots in water and played a continuous noise at 220Hz, a similar frequency to the plant clicks, they found that the plants grew towards the source of the sound.

“Everyone knows that plants react to light, and scientists also know that plants use volatile chemicals to communicate with each other, for instance, when danger – such as a herbivore – approaches,” Dr. Gagliano said in a university news release.

“I was working one day in my herb garden and started to wonder if maybe plants were also sensitive to sounds – why not? – so I decided as a scientist to find out.”

While it has been long known that plants grow towards light, previous research from Exeter University found cabbage plants emitted methyl jasmonate gas when their surfaces are cut or pierced to warn its neighbors of danger such as caterpillars or garden shears.

Researchers from the earlier study also found that the when the volatile gas was emitted, the nearly cabbage plants appeared to receive the urgent message that and protected themselves by producing toxic chemicals on their leaves to fend off predators like caterpillars.

However, new research, published in the journal Trends in Plant Science, has revealed that plants not only respond to sound, but they also communicate to each other by making “clicking” sounds.

Scientists suspect that sound and vibration may play an essential role in the survival of plants by giving them information about the environment around them.

Researchers said sounds waves are easily transmissible through soil, and could be used to pick up threats like drought from their neighbors further away.

Gagliano said that the latest findings shows that the role of sound in plants has yet to be fully explored, “leaving serious gaps our current understanding of the sensory and communicatory complexity of these organisms”.

In addition to other forms of sensory response, “it is very likely that some form of sensitivity to sound and vibrations also plays an important role in the life of plants,” she added.

Hubble finds galaxies at redshifts 9 to 12

December 13, 2012

Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have uncovered seven primitive galaxies from a distant population that formed more than 13 billion years ago. In the process, their observations have put forward a candidate for the record for the most distant galaxy found to date (at redshift 11.9), and have shed new light on the earliest years of cosmic history. The galaxies are seen as they were when the Universe was less than 4 percent of its present age.

This image shows the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2012, an improved version of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image featuring additional observation time. The new data have revealed for the first time a population of distant galaxies at redshifts between 9 and 12, including the most distant object observed to date. These galaxies are shown at the top of the picture, and their locations are pinpointed in the main image.

These galaxies will require confirmation using spectroscopy by the forthcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope before they are considered to be fully confirmed.

Where the internet lives…

October 18, 2012

Google opens its doors to provide a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the internet.

Have you ever wondered about what happens when you search on Google or when you watch a You Tube video?

The internet has become such a mainstream part of daily life that it almost seems like it exists somewhere out there in an unseen and invisible network that literally lives in the ethers.

All the internet language implies a floaty, insubstantial world of intangible information and mysterious interconnections. We see words like Google, the Cloud, information super highway, and ethernet and assume that it’s all out there somewhere, drifting around in an unseen world of its own.

But it’s not! The internet is a physical place and is located in countries such as the USA, Finland and Belgium and with more centres planned for Chile; Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

Check out Google’s new initiative to show it’s ‘Server farms’ – enormous complexes that require very physical systems to carry out its daily work; systems such as cooling towers, air vents, colourful cables and water pipes, that are housed in complexes so vast that staff are given bicycles to get around the workspace!

According to Google:

When you’re on a Google website (like right now), you’re accessing one of the most powerful server networks in the known Universe. But what does that actually look like? Here’s your chance to see inside what we’re calling the physical Internet.

The initiative called ‘Where the internet lives’ can be seen here  (www.google.com/about/datacenters)  and also offers an ‘Up my street’ type virtual tour of a data centre – streetview  (www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/streetview)

Planet Found in Nearest Star System to Earth

October 17, 2012

European astronomers have discovered a planet with about the mass of the Earth orbiting a star in the Alpha Centauri system — the nearest to Earth. It is also the lightest exoplanet ever discovered around a star like the Sun. The planet was detected using the HARPS instrument on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. The results will appear online in the journal Nature on 17 October 2012.

Alpha Centauri is one of the brightest stars in the southern skies and is the nearest stellar system to our Solar System — only 4.3 light-years away. It is actually a triple star — a system consisting of two stars similar to the Sun orbiting close to each other, designated Alpha Centauri A and B, and a more distant and faint red component known as Proxima Centauri [1]. Since the nineteenth century astronomers have speculated about planets orbiting these bodies, the closest possible abodes for life beyond the Solar System, but searches of increasing precision had revealed nothing. Until now.

Our observations extended over more than four years using the HARPS instrument and have revealed a tiny, but real, signal from a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B every 3.2 days,” says Xavier Dumusque (Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto, Portugal), lead author of the paper. “It’s an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit!

The European team detected the planet by picking up the tiny wobbles in the motion of the star Alpha Centauri B created by the gravitational pull of the orbiting planet [2]. The effect is minute — it causes the star to move back and forth by no more than 51 centimetres per second (1.8 km/hour), about the speed of a baby crawling. This is the highest precision ever achieved using this method.

Alpha Centauri B is very similar to the Sun but slightly smaller and less bright. The newly discovered planet, with a mass of a little more than that of the Earth [3], is orbiting about six million kilometres away from the star, much closer than Mercury is to the Sun in the Solar System. The orbit of the other bright component of the double star, Alpha Centauri A, keeps it hundreds of times further away, but it would still be a very brilliant object in the planet’s skies.

The first exoplanet around a Sun-like star was found by the same team back in 1995 and since then there have been more than 800 confirmed discoveries, but most are much bigger than the Earth, and many are as big as Jupiter [4]. The challenge astronomers now face is to detect and characterise a planet of mass comparable to the Earth that is orbiting in the habitable zone [5] around another star. The first step has now been taken [6].

This is the first planet with a mass similar to Earth ever found around a star like the Sun. Its orbit is very close to its star and it must be much too hot for life as we know it,” adds Stéphane Udry (Geneva Observatory), a co-author of the paper and member of the team, “but it may well be just one planet in a system of several. Our other HARPS results, and new findings from Kepler, both show clearly that the majority of low-mass planets are found in such systems.

This result represents a major step towards the detection of a twin Earth in the immediate vicinity of the Sun. We live in exciting times!” concludes Xavier Dumusque.

ESO will hold an online press conference offering journalists the opportunity to discuss the result and its impact with the scientists. To participate please read our media advisory.

Notes

[1] The components of a multiple star are named by adding uppercase letters to the name of the star. Alpha Centauri A is the brightest component, Alpha Centauri B is the slightly fainter second star and Alpha Centauri C is the much fainter Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is slightly closer to Earth than A or B and hence is formally the closest star.

[2] HARPS measures the radial velocity of a star — its speed towards or away from the Earth — with extraordinary precision. A planet in orbit around a star causes the star to regularly move towards and away from a distant observer on Earth. Due to the Doppler effect, this radial velocity change induces a shift of the star’s spectrum towards longer wavelengths as it moves away (called a redshift) and a blueshift (towards shorter wavelengths) as it approaches. This tiny shift of the star’s spectrum can be measured with a high-precision spectrograph such as HARPS and used to infer the presence of a planet.

[3] Using the radial velocity method, astronomers can only estimate a minimum mass for a planet as the mass estimate also depends on the tilt of the orbital plane relative to the line of sight, which is unknown. But, from a statistical point of view, this minimum mass is often close to the real mass of the planet.

[4] NASA’s Kepler mission has found 2300 candidate planets using an alternative method — searching for the slight drop in the brightness of a star as a planet passes in front of it (transits) and blocks some of the light. The majority of planet candidates detected by this transit method are very distant from us. But, in contrast, the planets found by HARPS are around stars close to the Sun — with the new discovery being the closest yet. This makes them better targets for many kinds of additional follow-up observations such as characterising the planet’s atmosphere.

[5] The habitable zone is a narrow annular region around a star in which water may be present in liquid form if conditions are right.

[6] ESPRESSO, the Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations, is to be installed on the ESO Very Large Telescope. Currently undergoing final design, it is scheduled to start operating in late-2016 or early-2017. ESPRESSO will feature radial velocity precision of 0.35 km/hour or less. For comparison, Earth induces a 0.32 km/hour radial velocity on the Sun. This resolution should thus enable ESPRESSO to discover Earth-mass planets in the habitable zone. The ESPRESSO consortium is led by team members responsible for the current discovery.

Astrologer & Psychic Denise Siegel says Obama to win 2012 election

September 23, 2012

Astrologer Denise Siegel has a good track record of accurately predicting the outcome of the US elections. Her opinion is that President Obama will win the 2012 election and that in 2016 it will be Hilary Clinton. To see what she has to say visit her blog article at astrologyandpsychicpredictions.wordpress.com

Here is a short reblogged extract:

===========================

Mitt Romeny’s Chart reposted with some extras

I didn’t post Mitt’s chart earlier because I did it on a different computer but here it is of course without his time of birth.

As you can see in his chart there is a plethora of water in his chart which as I researched past presidents was a no go. There has been very few Pisces presidents – the most notable being George Washington. However Washington had only one planet in water – his Sun in Pisces. In almost all cases of presidents we see very strong air/fire dynamics and this was also true of Washington despite his sun sign. I also actually ran the charts of both candidates a few days ago and was surprised to see just how impossible it would be for Romney to win against Obama. Pluto which rules the job of President is making terrible aspects to Romney during this period until the election which is why all this is coming to the surface – the real Romney. Obama on the other hand has a lot of support, trines and positive aspects. There are many reasons I won’t go into here but a few days ago after looking at their charts I was more than reassured my spirit guide was oh, so right about Obama winning. I’m going to repost what I wrote here back in May of this year about Romney’s chart which I completely stand by and you will see just how right on it has shown itself to be. I took a screen shot again so everyone could see the date. You can also use the search button on this site to find all I’ve written about Romney and Ryan.

Astrologer predicts President Romney and a new Pope!

August 29, 2012

Of the previous eight elected presidents of the USA who sought a second term, only two have not been returned to office: Jimmy Carter and George Bush (senior). So it should follow that President Obama has every chance of being re-elected. However according to astrologer Donal Holland, the unfolding of Barack Obama’s astrological birth-chart for the election 2012 and the inauguration 2013 shows in no uncertain terms that he will fail to win a second term.

And Holland has a good track record. He was spot on in his predictions for both the Irish and French presidential elections.

Furthermore he also predicts a new Pope in Vatican city by November 2012!

But first to Obama. According to Holland:

Obama’s office, Solar Return lord MC, Jupiter (Gemini 10.51) falls on royal fixed star Aldebaran (Gemini 10). Because Aldebaran is a first class magnitude star of Mars nature it can be deeply unpleasant. Having this unpleasantness therefore informing his significator of office in the year of an election can only bode ill for his re-election to the presidency.

He goes on to point out that:

The testimonies from the chart for the Lunar Return that governs Inauguration Day, 21 January 2013 are much more convincing. The Lunar Return’s most striking and significant testimony is lord 1, Mars (Capricorn 29.38) about to experience a major loss of dignity as it plunges from exaltation in Capricorn into a complete absence of dignity in Aquarius. For Obama to undergo such a significant drop in dignity, and from such an elevated height, and what is crucial, to experience it in the Lunar Return that presides over Inauguration Day when a change of leadership is potentially enacted, must mean he is stepping down from his exalted position as the in-coming president takes office.

And the same chart also describes a similar uncomfortable change of circumstance for his wife Michelle, represented by lord 7, Venus (Sagittarius 11.4).  Venus is on the powerful and malefic fixed star Antares (Sagittarius 10) in the constellation of the Scorpion that brought down proud, boastful and worldly Orion (stinging him to death). Accordingly Antares denotes endings, especially for those in powerful worldly positions. For Michelle Obama then, holder of the worldly title, First Lady, to have Antares on her significator in the Lunar Return that covers Inauguration Day, must signal her vacating her powerful position and leaving behind her life of privilege. It is precisely this specific experience of loss by his wife in this critical month of the transfer of power that underpins the claim that President Obama will leave office, January 2013.

So interesting times ahead for Romney perhaps? Read Holland’s full analysis here

In addition Dr Holland has just completed a detailed astrological analysis of Mitt Romney’s chart read the full article on his site here.

Now on to the Vatican!

Papal succession has always been of interest to fans of prediction, largely owing to the famous papal prophesies of St Malachy. According to Tom Horn and  Chris Putnam, authors of Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope is Here:

For more than 800 years scholars have pointed to the dark augury having to do with “the last Pope.” The prophecy, taken from St. Malachy’s “Prophecy of the Popes,” is among a list of verses predicting each of the Roman Catholic popes from Pope Celestine II to the final pope, Petrus Romanus or “Peter the Roman,” whose reign would end in the destruction of Rome.

First published in 1595, the prophecies were attributed to St. Malachy by a Benedictine historian named Arnold de Wyon, who recorded them in his book, Lignum Vitæ. Tradition holds that Malachy had been called to Rome by Pope Innocent II, and while there, he experienced the vision of the future popes, including the last one, which he wrote down in a series of cryptic phrases.

According to the prophecy, the next pope (following Benedict XVI) is to be the final pontiff, Petrus Romanus or Peter the Roman. The idea by some Catholics that the next pope on St. Malachy’s list heralds the beginning of “great apostasy” followed by “great tribulation” sets the stage for the imminent unfolding of apocalyptic events, something many non-Catholics would agree with.

This would give rise to a false prophet, who according to the book of Revelation leads the world’s religious communities into embracing a political leader known as Antichrist.

In recent history, several Catholic priests–some deceased now–have been surprisingly outspoken on what they have seen as this inevitable danger rising from within the ranks of Catholicism as a result of secret satanic “Illuminati-Masonic” influences.

These priests claim secret knowledge of an multinational power elite and occult hierarchy operating behind supranatural and global political machinations. Among this secret society are sinister false Catholic infiltrators who understand that, as the Roman Catholic Church represents one-sixth of the world’s population and over half of all Christians, it is indispensable for controlling future global elements in matters of church and state and the fulfillment of a diabolical plan they call “Alta Vendita,” which is set to assume control of the papacy and to help the False Prophet deceive the world’s faithful (including Catholics) into worshipping Antichrist.

As stated by Dr. Michael Lake on the front cover, Catholic and evangelical scholars have dreaded this moment for centuries. Unfortunately, as readers will learn, time for avoiding Peter the Roman just ran out.

All very dramatic! However Horn and Putnam’s book is an interesting read and may have astrological validation if Holland is yet again on the money. He claims that the next conclave will be upon us in the period 17 September – 14 October 2012.

According to Holland:

The significant progressed factor in Benedict’s chart flagging up the time of his death (in broad terms) is his progressed Asc (Cancer 15.08) conjunct fixed star Canopus (Cancer 15) representing an oar in the ship, the Argo.

It is named in honour of King Menelaus’ helmsman who died of a snake bite when his ship ran aground. The church, of course, has from earliest times been symbolised by the ship which navigates over the sea of the desire nature. Subjugation to the desire nature is a necessary condition of our human existence. Hence while Jesus walks on water, Peter sinks (Matthew 14:26-31).

In order then not to drown in the desires Peter needs a boat. And this has come to be associated with the church. Even the actual building carries a reference to this because the nave in a church derives from the Latin ‘navis’ (ship).

And significantly, as they struggle with their storm tossed barque on the sea of Galilee, the first leader of the Catholic church, Peter, along with his crew, the apostles, need reminding that the ship was, and will always be, watched over (Mark 4:35-41).

So, if the church is a ship piloted by Peter, it appears ominously significant that the chart of Pope Benedict XVI, the helmsman of the church, powerfully highlights the distinguished helmsman, Canopus, notable for his death. Canopus therefore is an illuminating testimony to Benedict’s death in the near future.

So interesting times ahead maybe. To read more see Dr Holland’s full analysis here. (astrodot.wordpress.com)

Ancient Knowledge: Sacred Geometry, Sound, Magnetics & the Universe

July 8, 2012

An interesting series of youtube videos, which propose that sound and unseen forces are what hold the universe together. We don’t know who made these, but thought they had some good information so sharing them here. According to the person who compiled them:

Solving ancient mysteries Part 1. “The Ancients” knew much more than given credit for regarding Life, The Universe, Astronomy, Advanced Mathematics, Magnetism, Healing, Unseen Forces etc.
Encoded knowledge is information that is conveyed in signs and symbols and we can find this knowledge all over the world. All these ancient sightings and geometric patterns (Sacred Geometry) symbolise unseen forces at work. We are being lied to by the media. Modern archaeologists don’t know what they’re talking about. “The Ancients” were not stupid or primitive. We just failed to de-code this knowledge conveyed in signs, symbols and ancient artwork. This kind of information is kept hidden from the public.

Scientists dont know what holds the universe together, the answer is sound and unseen forces. Matter is governed by sound frequencies. There is much more to life than we can perceive with our 5 senses. The question then becomes “who or what governs unseen forces?” What is behind the symmetry throughout nature? (Golden Ratio, Phi, Fibonacci Sequence etc.) It simply cant be just coincidence, in my opinion there is an intelligent mind / consciousness behind all this that keeps it all together.
