New special edition B£ note – nominate your Brixton hero

Paper notes, remember them?

Print

While it is true that the vast majority of B£ is now spent electronically, our notes remain popular with people in Brixton and beyond, and it’s not hard to see why. Designed by local artists and following heavy consultation with residents over who they wanted to see appear on the notes, they are a celebration of the history, art, politics and cultures of Brixton.

The figures on the notes are rightly celebrated for their achievements and deserving of the term “Brixton Hero”. However we feel that heroes should not be the preserve of the famous or public figure. We believe that there are heroes on every street in Brixton, those who run youth groups, help the elderly, clean our streets, create jobs for others, dish up great food, campaign for economic, social and environmental justice, and many more.

This year, to mark the 5th year of the Brixton Pound, we want to put the spotlight on these people and give them the ultimate immortal accolade – presence on a new special edition Brixton Pound note. Who are these people? That’s for you to decide. Over the next few weeks we’re going to be asking people to nominate their Brixton hero, starting at the Lambeth Country Show where you can come and write your suggestion on our enlarged note. You can also email [email protected] with the word HERO in the subject and a nomination, along with why you think this person is a Brixton Hero.

Brixton businesses to benefit from new app

dingo_02It has been a long time coming, but we’re excited to say that we’re nearly ready to launch an innovative new B£ app. For existing users it will mean functionality like easy account top up, a map of where you can spend B£, and a faster payment system. For new users it will allow you to sign up on the spot.

Businesses will also be able to create their own content and communicate this directly to B£ users. Check out our press release here. We are planning to launch the app in July so keep an eye out for announcements! #YourPound

#YourPound – Meet the Trader: Nour Cash & Carry

This blog post is by Hayley James, who is researching the Brixton Pound as part of her MA in Social Anthropology

Nour Cash & Carry has been a feature of the local community in Brixton for 20 years. For the last 12 years, they’ve been based in Market Row, selling all sorts of provisions, some from all over the world. Don’t be fooled by the deceptively small entrances on Market Row and Electric Avenue, it’s really big inside with a huge variety. The rows of spices, fresh fruit and vegetables look and smell amazing.

photo 3Nour’s customers are mainly local people, be it local foodies who want good-quality ingredients, or traders running the restaurants in the area, many of whom rely on Nour for a whole host of ingredients and supplies. One of the traders we recently spoke to described Nour as the centre of Brixton’s Universe, because you see everyone in there from time to time!

We were really pleased in January when Nour Supermarket started accepting the B£ through pay-by-text. They wanted to support their loyal local customers in developing the currency for the community. Since then, they’ve seen a slow but steady custom from B£ users using pay-by-text, including a few new customers who want to use B£.

Saja told us that so far the currency is working well for Nour, the pay-by-text service is good and their customers like that they now accept it. And it’s been especially good in supporting reciprocal trade – Saja can often be found using her B£ for much-needed coffee nearby in Rosie’s or Seven!

So head to Nour for all your food needs, what a great way to spend #yourpound!
