Ferdinand Gonnard
(1833-1923)

Ferdinand-Pierre-Joseph Gonnard was Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of Lyon, France. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Clermont-Ferrand, and a member of the Geological Society of France and the Association for the Advancement of Science in France. The mineral gonnardite was named after him by Lacroix in 1896, even though Gonnard originally described it as "mesole" (=thomsonite). Gonnard also wrote mineralogies of various French departments including Puy-de Dôme (1870) and Rhône and Loire (1906), and discovered and named the new species dumortierite in 1881. Numerous specimens collected by Gonnard remain in the collection of the University of Lyon and are shared between the Museum of Natural History and the Faculty of Sciences of Lyon, as well as other scientific institutions.
