Description

The Petronius field, located in 1,754 feet (535 meters) of water on Viosca Knoll Block 786, is roughly 130 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans. Petronius was discovered in 1995 and contains estimated recoverable reserves of 80 to 100 MMboe.

Chevron is the operator of the field and holds 50% interest; Marathon Oil holds the remaining 50% interest.

Field Development

The Petronius field consists of 17 wells, 10 producing and seven water-injection wells, connected to a compliant tower structure with production and drilling facilities.

The tower, considered one of the tallest freestanding structures in the world, was an industry first because of its use of flexible pilings. The pilings were designed to withstand the force of hurricane winds and weather. McDermott Engineering designed the tower while J. Ray McDermott installed it in 1,750 feet (533 meters) of water. The entire structure weighs roughly 43,000 tons (39,009 tonnes), is 1,870 feet (570 meters) high, and has a maximum production capacity of 60,000 bopd and 100 MMcf/d (3 MMcm/d).

The facility's topsides are 210 feet (64 meters) by 141 feet (43 meters) by 59 feet (18 meters) high, and contain all processing equipment, water-injection facilities and export pipeline pumps. Gulf Island Fabrication won a $50 million deck fabrication and integration contract; and Jacobs Linder, formerly WH Linder & Associates, won the $10 million contract for engineering design work of the topsides and the procurement support.

In 1997, the subsea templates were laid, and the mooring foundation piles were installed on the seabed. The mooring system is based on 12 piles; three located at each corner leg that extends from the tower legs through the mudline 450 feet (137 meters) into the seabed. These piles provide the foundation capacity, and they were designed to allow the tower to stay within an envelope of a 25-foot sway (8 meters), with a 10-foot (3-meter) rotation sway at the surface.

In 1998, while installing the tower, one of the two deck modules fell into the Gulf of Mexico as it was lifted into place by J. Ray McDermott's DB50 barge. The south module, which contained the production equipment, water flood facilities and crew quarters, fell to the sea floor and could not be recovered due to the deep-water depth.

Production

In May 2000, the second deck module was installed, and production commenced on the field on July 9, 2000. Then, in 2005, production was halted because Hurricane Ivan's eye passed directly over Petronius and caused damage to the rig crew quarters, production equipment, and deck structures.

The platform initiated production in March 2005. Peak production on the field is expected to reach 50,000 bopd and 70 MMcf/d (2 MMcm/d).

The produced oil is delivered to the Flotta oil terminal by a 20-mile (32-kilometer), 14-inch-diameter pipeline. Gas is exported via a 12-mile (19-kilometer), 12-inch-diameter gas pipeline.

Perseus

Located on Viosca Knoll Block 830, roughly 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans, is the Perseus satellite field. Chevron holds a 50% interest and serves as the operator of the field; Marathon holds the remaining 50% interest.

The Perseus discovery well is in a water depth of 3,376 feet (1,029 meters) and approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) located from the Petronius platform. Drilled by Noble Drilling's semisub, Noble Amos Runner, the discovery well was drilled to a depth of 13,314 feet (4,058 meters) and encountered 166 feet (51 meters) of net pay. The reservoir contains 30 degree API gravity oil.

The satellite field is subsea tied-back to the Petronius production facility. In April 2005, Perseus commenced production.

Marathon 10K Report
Date: Oct. 2004
Type: Status Update
Announced in 2003, the Perseus discovery is located on Viosca Knoll Block 830 in the Gulf of Mexico approximately five miles from the existing Petronius platform. The Perseus discovery was expected to begin production in 2004 via an extended-reach well drilled from the Petronius platform. Due to hurricane activity in September 2004 and the resulting damage to the Petronius platform, production from Perseus has been delayed until repairs of the Petronius platform can be completed. We hold a 50 percent interest in the Perseus discovery.
Marathon Makes Discovery on Perseus Prospect
Date: Aug. 2003
Type: New Discovery
Marathon Oil has made a discovery on the Perseus prospect in Viosca Knoll Block 830 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The Perseus discovery well is located in 3,376 feet of water, approximately 150 miles southeast of New Orleans and approximately five miles from the existing Petronius platform. The well was drilled by Noble Drilling's semisub, Noble Amos Runner.
