Objectives:
Promote and organise sanskrit and oriental learning and research on ancient and modern lines
Arrange periodical meeting and conferences of scholars and conduct seminars
Maintain a library of books, journals and manuscripts
Publish the journal and other books/monographs pertaining to sanskrit, oriental and indological subjects
History
The institute was founded in March 1944 to perpetuate the memory of the great savant Prof. Sastri. Under the chairmanship of Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar,the then vicechancellor of the madras university, the scholar friends, students and admirers started the venture. It was formally inaugurated on 22nd April 1945 by Sri S.V. Ramamurthy, ICS, adviser to the governor of Madras Presidency. Renowned pwersonalities like Rt. Honble V.S. Srinivasa Sastriar, Dr. Sir S. Radhakrishnan, Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer, Sri S. Satyamurthy, Prof. M. Hiriyana, Dr. C. Kunhan Raja, Sri S. Vaiyapuri Pillai, Sri K. Balasubramania Iyer and Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar were actively associated with the Institute of presidents, secretaries and members. Dr. V. Raghavan Sanskrit scholar of international repute, was the founder secretary and mainstay of the institute.
100% Income Tax Exemption
Recognising the very good research work done by the institute, the Income Tax Department of the Govt of India gave 100% tax exemption to donations to the institute in 1990. The exemption was under clause 35 (i) (iii) relating to social sciences. The exemption is available upto March 2003 and is likely to be extended further.
