And The Word Is (2011)…

“A word is not a crystal, transparent and unchanged; it is the skin of a living thought, and may vary greatly in color and content according to the circumstances and the time in which it is used.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

One Word

A new year is upon us.  A time to start fresh.  To review the past and look toward the future.

“I want to lose weight.”

”I will become more organized.”

“I will paint.”

New Year’s Resolutions.   Grand plans to start the year anew.  Statements that touch upon some area in our life that we’re not completely happy with.  Ever done them – made New Year’s resolutions?  Just like the spike in gym memberships in January of each year – followed by the decline in February, New Year’s resolutions typically fade quickly as our daily lives takes us to where we have always been.

Two years ago, I was inspired by a much different approach to New Year’s resolutions – a concept by singer/song writer/blogger Christine Kane.  This idea – to come up with one word to focus on.

The idea – that this one word will connect with us at a much deeper level, and inspire us to make it become part of our daily life.  That it will BE part of our true fabric.  And in being part of us at a much deeper level, this word will be a guide toward the life we desire, toward doing the things that are in alignment with what this word means to us.

One word.  For 2009, the word I chose was COURAGE.  And in many amazing ways, that one word manifested itself in my life.

For 2010, the word I chose was SPLASH.  Again, this word became a deep part of my being during these past twelve months (and is something I will also be writing about soon, as I review this past year).

2011

My word.

S H I N E

Note:  If you are having trouble viewing this, please click here.

SHINE – what does that mean to me?

Perhaps I can begin to answer that with another question.  Have you ever held yourself back, because maybe, just maybe, there is some fear of stepping into who you truly are?   …of shining your true colors?

And maybe the thing is, we even tiptoe around our own greatness (and that greatness, it is within each of us)…lurking just at the edge of the shadows.  Perhaps stepping briefly into the light…

SHINE

I’m there.  I’ve been in the shadows, stepping out into the light…one step at a time.

Except.

Except, it’s so easy to step back, too.  To step back to that “safe” place, just outside the light.  How about you?  Do you hold yourself back sometimes?

Because.

Because  why?

This year will be about stepping more fully, more authentically, with more trust, into that light…a light that comes from within…and will shine more fully outward.

I am ready to SHINE!

Are you?

Your Turn
What would you choose for a word to focus on?    This year, 2011, has many great possibilities in store for each one of you – may you find  much meaning in all that is to come in the next twelve months!

Lance writes stories from his heart, aiming to inspire and motivate, as you align more fully with YOUR true peak. My word this year is FOCUS. I have big dreams and I have a loose plan to get me there. But it will require that I FOCUS on that which will make me grow my business and not take away from my time. (Unfortunately, sitting here writing on this post is ironically taking me away from that time). I will be less willing to give over my time to things that take me away from my FOCUS because I am driven to make this work!

Thanks for sharing this inspiration. I can see you so brightly and I have to wear shades!
Enjoy the day!

In 2010, my word was FOCUS. And boy did I! I completed my 500 hour level yoga teaching cert, tested for and received my first degree black belt, and I started my online teaching business. My focus was cleary on the things I wanted to bring to completion.

This year, my word is ABUNDANCE. And I’ll be blogging about that later this week!

I Love your word, SHINE. You are a light that shines very brightly!!

Hi Lance,

Interesting idea to summarize one year using one word. This got me thinking. My word for 2011 is ACT – because I tend to spend too much time thinking and not enough doing, and I want to focus more on action this year.

I love this idea, Lance, and last year I found myself, subconsiously by the way, repeating the word PEACE. It worked in those sometimes scary moments of looking for the light when things got challenging.

This year…my word? PLAY! I hope to bring play into the forefront of my teaching, my language, my family, my music, and my life. How can you not have fun when you PLAY?
Mostly, I want to achieve play to recognize the importance of better balance, and what really matters.

Thank you for sharing your bright light with all of us Lance!

My word would be OPEN. I often want to do nice things for others, but feel awkward stepping outside my (or maybe their) comfort zone to do so. I recently learned a doctor of mine was ill and decided to send a letter to her home to show I cared. Time passed and she remained ill so I sent another longer letter to check in and show that someone was thinking of her. I now have an upcoming appointment with her and feel awkward for some odd reason that I sent such a personal letter saying that she has meant a lot to me and had so skillfully healed all my medical issues that it saddened me to think I could not do the same for her. I know I should not feel awkward about being so open and caring, but I suppose part of me was raised to always butt my nose out of people’s personal concerns unless they were a close friend and that to do so otherwise would be perceived as rude. The Dali Lllama said that we need to break out of our Western definition of intimacy and embrace each other on this journey of life. As nervous as I am to see this person now, in 2011 I am facing my fears and being that open, caring person I really am inside outwardly.

Reply

Lance January 4, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Humble Human,
Thank you so, so much for sharing this.

It’s easy to sit here and talk about all these grand plans to live our lives in accordance with what feels “right”. It’s another, altogether, to go “out there” and really live it. You are. And what a beautiful example. And it is beautiful, even if it is one that feels like a step outside of your comfort zone. Caring. And being fully open to that. That is such a beautiful gift.

And this all has me thinking, what if we all lived this way – caring just a bit more for our fellow humans beings walking on this journey…

So, I love what you are embracing for this coming year, and for the bold steps you are taking. Know that what you have shared, it has touched my soul today…

A humble human at best January 4, 2011 at 7:52 pm

Thank you Lance.. Although I have only seen this doctor a few times, something about her touched me. She is quite, talented in her field and not very open herself. However, I suppose to comment on an earlier post you made…I saw her”light” despite her desire to hide it. Turns out, I may be her kids teacher in a few years as well as they make their way through our school system.
Here is a question for you and your readers, when I see her again do I say anything about the letters? I am thinking she might act like it didn’t even happen due to her reserved personality. I don’t want to chicken out on my kindness and want to show my sincerity. I’ve thought this over and have wondered if I should give a big hug when I see her (my style of approaching those I know to be ill) and ask how she is or simply let her decide whether or not to bring up the situation…which will probably mean it is not discussed.
Thanks again Lance. Your website has continually inspired me to live a positive, compassionate life.

Lance January 5, 2011 at 5:34 am

I’m going to give you two answers. And, ultimately, these are just my perspective. What matters, I truly believe, is what you heart speaks to you.

Answer 1: If this were me in your shoes, going to visit this doctor – I would have a challenging time to openly share a hug, not knowing how it would be received. Ultimately, though, the doctor’s reaction is solely her reality and not yours.

Answer 2: If I were the doctor, I would feel a deeper connection to you by this shared hug. And, even if I personally didn’t acknowledge your letter, I would receive the hug and feel it’s warmth in my soul. This would be a deep and caring gift, for me, even if I was openly not ready to talk about it. Even if my only words to you happened to be “thank you”, it would still touch a special place of humanity in me.

Okay, so as you can see from this – it would not be easy for me, either, to be in your shoes. Still, if I reversed it all, and in the role of doctor – I would love this (even if I couldn’t show that outwardly).

So, no easy answers here for you. I really do think it comes down to what your heart is speaking to you. Your compassion shines through here, as well as your deep care and concern for how another might feel. That is a gift. All of that is.

What you have done already – by sending a letter – that is a gift too.

And this is your journey. It is one that I sense has deep meaning for you, especially in your connections with others. And know that this is all so beautiful…as is your soul…

Tina January 4, 2011 at 6:13 pm

I just wanted to say that I think it’s wonderful you reached out to your doctor with your thoughtful letters. I’m sure the letters and your expression of kindness meant more to her than you know, so please don’t feel awkward about it. If only we all reached out to one another with such loving kindness. Namaste.

SHINE; I love your word, the video you chose to accompany it, and how you will so completely embody it!!

My word for 2011 is EPIPHANY. The dictionary defines the word epiphany as the feeling associated with the sudden realization of a great truth. But what does the word Epiphany mean to me?
Let me start by saying that, like most people, I worry that I’m not doing enough of the right things to be successful. I wrack my brain for the solutions to my problems and I push myself to take more action. And I’m afraid that it will never be enough.

By embracing the word epiphany, I’m releasing the belief that I have to push myself to figure out everything before I set out for some destination. I’ll accept that there’s a Divine spirit, a Universal energy – for real this year – that wants my best life and provides exactly the insights I need, when I most need them.

I’ll stop doubting and second-guessing myself. I won’t think, “Where’s my epiphany? Was that it?” Instead, I will tell myself, “When it comes, I’ll know.” And I know, too, that I’ll feel inspired to take just the right kind of determined action based on what it tells me.

Here’s to a year that SHINES with sudden realizations of great truths for us all this year! Thanks again for this great post! I also LOVED reading everyone else’s words for this year!! Much love, Stacey

Reply

Lance January 4, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Stacey,
I love this, how you have described “epiphany”, and what it means to you. And what a beautiful place to be, accepting that Divine spirit as being there, for you (and for me, and for everyone), providing…

That doubting can be so easy to do. All sorts of “what if’s”… Except, we don’t have to do that.

And you are choosing to “be” with the moment, and be okay with all of that. I really just love how that feels…

So, so good to have you here, dear friend.

Much love…always,
Lance

Happy New Year Lance!

What a great reflection to start off the year!
I think the word “courage” will be predominant in my life this year, but my word will be “centered” – I choose this word as this year I want to center my energies in valuable and productive ways, in new ways, as our Earth continues to vortex into new energies itself.

And love your word – you definitely SHINE brightly in my world :)

Evita,
Happy New Year to you, too!!

Centered – this word really feels so “right” for you. Not that it should matter what I think is right, but just know that as I see this word – it feels like a good place for you. More than that, though – it also feels like a really good place for all those who encounter you this year, too. Your gift, it’s how you shine outward – and when you are even more centered (and aligned) with what has meaning to you, you reach others in very special ways.

So looking forward to what this new year holds for you!

Hi Lance :-)

Already 50 odd comments [all while I was sleeping - darn it that I live on the other side of the world] LOL Lance… you are the epitome of SHINE [you do it soooo well]… so you’ve fulfilled your New Year Word already.

This post really resonated with me as I continue the struggle to keep the balance between saying too much and saying too little. It’s a struggle all bloggers [especially] can relate to… that fine line between total authenticity [being ourselves no holds barred] and the need for discretion [on our own behalf]. Not everyone has our back – though we wish it could be so.

I’d love to choose the word BALANCE [as a Libran that already goes down well] but perhaps that is part of the problem. The eternal quest to keep all things equal. Equal parts authenticity and discretion?

So I chose the word AUDACIOUS though even the sound of it sends shivers up my spine [full disclosure here - grin] but audaciousness is a quality I fully believe is the essential ingredient in any venture that will ultimately be worth its salt! That… and authenticity [which I have always fully believed in]

Thanks for getting me thinking Lance – [always a dangerous thing LOL] I have been sitting on a New Year’s video in review that I made [but will I be brave enough to post it?] Audaciousness… yes… put my toe in and test the water [grin]

Keep shining your light Lance on 2011 :-)

Jean,
(I slept for part of this time, too!!)

You, dear friend, are way too sweet and kind to me!! (and I LOVE it!!)

Ahhh…I can really relate to what you are saying. How much do we share? If we don’t, are we not being fully authentic? If we share too much, does it appear as though we don’t listen at all? Perhaps it’s in listening to our hearts…and believing that what it speaks…it is all good.

AUDACIOUS!!! Now, there’s a completely awesome word!! And, that it sends shivers up your spine – that just shows that you are stretching yourself (and I think that is soooo cool!!)!

Now…about that video of yours: POST IT!!!!! (please!!!!)
(I can’t wait to see it!!)

Oh, this is going to be a FUN year!!!

Okay, phew! I was worried that if Evita, Simon, Jenny or Joy got here before me, they’d use this word… but guess what? They didn’t (yet)!

Let’s start with you, dear friend. If “Shine” is your word, then my goodness, you already do, but I love how you clarified it because certainly there is something to be said about stepping comfortably into who we REALLY ARE. I support and encourage you, Lance, always. Your gifts are profound and I’m guessing you’ve only begun to shine. And hey, thanks, because now I can safely say that if that’s your word for 2011, it’s going to be one sunny year! (smile)

My word is (are you ready?) … Y E S !
(Thank you, Simon Hay & New Moon Family.)

I’m going to say yes to life and allow it to say yes to me in previously unimagined ways. Oh man, I feel it coming on now… YES!
I was going to say “open,” but that’s not quite it (and besides, that word doesn’t sit right completely — there’s an unguarded aspect to it, and I always flash to “open heart surgery” when I think of the word. Eesh!).
So we’re going with (say it with me, dear friend!) Y E S !!!

I love you, Lance!

Megan,
YES!!!!

It’s so, so good to have you here. Well, and then you make me feel all sorts of good with your sweet words!! See, you have a way of just lifting me up, no matter what!! YES, you do!!!

YES to life!! Now, isn’t that beautiful, and grand, and just simply wonderful! And yes, the word YES does feel more unguarded, more “in the moment”, more spontaneous. And…well…it sure does beat open heart surgery (well, I’m guessing it does…).

And you know what – as I read this, I did exactly that – I said it with you…YES!!!

Love you lots and lots!!

Love it Lance & great word! I can’t wait to read more about your “shine” experiences!

I think I am one that tends to the shadows due to that fear of failure although doing my blog & posting my pic was a big step for me.

I will have to think of my word as I like that concept. Maybe LIVE.. but I will think about this some more.

It shall be a shiny year around here!!!!

And you know what, I so relate to what you are saying about the shadows. And, being more open here in this space, it has truly helped me to step out more from those shadows, and embrace the light. Now, to take that a few more steps…

And, great idea – letting this idea soak in a bit – and then choosing a word that really has meaning for you…

A great year it will be!!!

I like your idea of selecting one word to guide our upcoming year. It’s hard, though, to limit it down to one. But I’m going to choose Acceptance — acceptance of what is, exactly as it is. I want to accept and embrace myself fully at this moment and stop feeling like I need to improve or change. I also want to accept my life as it unfolds each moment.

Indeed, it is…

Dude. You so shine and I love that your intention on it will make you a supernova. Go big. Shine Bright.

You do Lance. You do shine on us all. In your family’s life and in everyone you meet. I feel tanner cause you shine on me – ha ha. :)

Ahem, seriously. My words for 2011 are EASE and SUSTAINABILITY. Ease-because of a newfound realization that all is working cooperatively so I might as well let it and not get in the way and Sustainable because this is a year of true foundation building. Not so much a year of up and out, but one more of roots to hold up the mighty tree that is growing.

Have I mentioned lately, how shiny you are my friend?

Katie, my wish for you is that you do continue to nurture those roots that are there. You have created something very special. I have believed this for some time (it seems like just yesterday we were talking for the first time…). And I know this has been both exciting and challenging in juggling all that there is. (you are a master at this, by the way!) Anyway, as you continue to strengthen those roots, may you find peace in knowing that this is all so, so good…

Have I mentioned how much I love you!!

Happy beautiful new year!

Lance, ever since you told me about Christine Kane, I have been following her and she is an amazing writer and thinker….I don’t really play the word game but love watching others do it. How can I focus on one word all year long? Impossible….so along those lines, just to play along and challenge me, I chose Patience, which, if you knew me, would make you nod very excitedly because I so need it…And I want to exercise Patience with my evolution into yoga, into tango, into my photography and into the blog’s growth and with my balancing everything else…..So here’s to your Splash and to my Patience!

What a fantastic approach to reach your goals for the new year. Often times, we set the bar and we feel we can’t reach it. But using a word…well, that’s just genius. Each situation you’re in, think of your word. If you see something happen, have the courage to do something about it! I think my word for this year will be SMILE : ) I need to smile more often, but more importantly than that, find something to smile about. I will find one thing each day to smile about randomly. : D

My word for 2011 is *Retreat, and theme is to be (Jubilee) a series of celebrations.
What Retreat means to me: A Time to rest, to Sabbath with who we are, and to Come Completely Forward and Welcome Our Truth. Renewal, rejuvenation. And Self-care (Women empowering women to care for themselves especially) for the Sisterhood.

Cheers to SHINING… and relaxing into who we are.

Hi Lance:Happy new year! Shine, what a great word for 2011. I know my 2010 word was “humor” and because of some major health issues that my mother has been going through it was honestly difficult to remember this word of the year during the tough times. But I certainly did my best to keep my sense of humor. I’ve got to hand it to you Lance, you’ve made some great WOTY choices and they’re a great example for all of us. Best wishes for a great 2011!

Reply

Lance January 6, 2011 at 9:43 pm

@TimPio Tim,
Happy New Year to YOU, too!! When we are dealing with challenging times, like with what your mother is going through, humor can be something we let slip. And that’s okay. It’s okay, wherever we are in this life we’re living. And the moments when the humor did come back, I’m sure these were lighter moments that helped to bring a smile to what might otherwise have been “less than joyous” times.

Anyway, may your new year be filled with many moments of goodness, joy, and humor…

Hi Lance!

I love the idea of choosing a word for the year. And I so appreciate you sharing yours with us, along with the words you’ve chosen in the past. Such a powerful concept. My observation about you is that you currently SHINE (in a big way!) in ‘who you are’ and in ‘whatever you are doing’. So if you actually ‘focus’ on this word as your word for the year…look out, world! I know you will make this year a great one, shining your light brightly. And on the receiving end, we love it.

My word is LOVE. To live in love, to exude love, to share it with others; to love all that I am and do. There, I said it. Thank you for encouraging me to claim it and say it out loud. :)

Thanks, Lance, for your inspiration and for shining your light for all of us.

I love this! I’ve been saying for years that New Year’s Resolutions never hold because it takes more than just willpower to make a change over the long term: it takes a serious lifestyle choice to change. It takes a change in our beliefs and our thought-patterns, because it is our thoughts which determine our actions, and our actions which shape our lives.

I always called them “New Year’s REVolutions” because it was a break from the old patterns and in with the newer and healthier choices. Thanks so much for the reminder!
