After easily trouncing Sweden 80-64 and Thailand 88-25 in preliminary play, the United States advanced to the round-robin championship round.

Facing defending champions South Korea, the USA led 39-34 at the half, then broke away in the second half and rolled to a convincing 86-66 victory. University of South Carolina's Shelia Foster and Old Dominion University's Janet Davis led the U.S. squad with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Following a day off, 6'3' University of Southern California standout Paula McGee recorded 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the United States to a 100-49 win over France.

The USA's next opponent, eventual bronze medalists Australia, proved to be an even match for the U.S. Neither team managed to gain a considerable lead throughout the contest and with 31 seconds remaining, the Americans held a slim 61-60 lead. After being fouled, McGee converted on both free throws to cushion the USA's lead to 63-60. Australia's Jenny Cheesman was then fouled and, after making both her shots, closed the gap to 63-62. With two seconds showing on the clock, 5'11' Cathy Boswell was sent to the line and made both her free throws and the U.S. came away with the hard-fought 65-62 victory. McGee led the USA's effort against Australia with a game-high 25 points and 6'1' forward Valerie Walker added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The United States contingent had no trouble with their next opponent as they thrashed Republic of China - Kuang Hua 96-59. Walker recorded 18 points to lead the U.S., while Boswell scored 16, McGee added 15 and Davis and University of Kentucky center Valerie Still each pitched in 14 points.

The USA, after leading 47-28 at the half, coasted to its seventh straight victory, downing Republic of China 97-58 behind a spectacular 21 point, 21 rebound effort by McGee.

Facing an unbeaten Canadian team for the gold medal, the United States fell short 70-67 in front of a capacity crowd of 10,000 to earn the silver medal with an overall record of 7-1.

Both 5'5' University of Tennessee guard Lea Henry and McGee, who led the USA in scoring (19.6 ppg.) and rebounding (9.3 rpg.), were selected to the Jones Cup All-Tournament Team.
