Benghazi army base falls to Ansar al-Sharia
Ansar al-Sharia and its allies on Tuesday (July 29th) captured the main military base in Benghazi, Libya Herald reported. Saiqa Special Forces were forced to abandon their headquarters in the Buatni district after the site suffered multiple missile strikes.
Ansar al-Sharia head Mohamed Al-Zahawi and Libya Shield chief Wissam Ben Hamid were later shown in a video standing in front of the headquarters.
Also on Tuesday, a Libyan fighter jet engaged in paramilitary attacks on Islamists in Benghazi crashed and exploded. The pilot ejected safely. It was not immediately clear if the plane was shot down or suffered a malfunction, AFP quoted a military source as saying.
