Election campaigns, festivals canceled after Kaohsiung explosions

Taipei -- Both the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced Friday that their election campaigns were suspended indefinitely after gas explosions in Kaohsiung claimed the lives of 24 people and injured more than 270 others.

Activities related to the November municipal and local elections were suspended so that all resources can be put into relief efforts in the wake of one of the most devastating accidents in Taiwan's history, the parties said.

In addition, at least two major festivals planned for Saturday to celebrate the Chinese Valentine's Day were canceled as a result of the incident.

They include the Dadaocheng Fireworks Festival in Taipei and a marine tourism festival scheduled to be held in a fishing harbor in Houlong, Miaoli County.
