The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has hired Anton Gunn to serve as the Executive Director of Community Health Innovation and Chief Diversity Officer as part of the medical center’s leadership team. Gunn will begin work in January 2015, after completing a semester as a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics.
Patrick J. Cawley, M.D., Vice President of Clinical Operations and MUSC Medical Center CEO, said Gunn’s responsibilities will include implementing innovative programs to improve community health and education and the implementation of the MUSC strategic diversity plan. He also will serve as an advisor to MUSC President David Cole, M.D.
Gunn was selected for the position following a national search. His distinguished career spans nearly 20 years, including service as a senior official with the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. He previously served as an elected leader in the South Carolina House of Representatives, becoming the first African American to represent his district in 2008. Gunn holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of South Carolina.

Multiple agencies are responded to reports of vehicles in flood waters in and around the downtown Charleston area.Officials issue a warning to everyone traveling in the area, exercise extreme caution and avoid driving in standing water. Water has been reported to be in excess of 3-4 feet deep. Do not drive through flooded intersections or on flooded roads.

Authorities are investigating a shooting on College Park RoadAccording to officials, On August 8, 2014 at 9:30 pm a Berkeley County Sheriff's Office deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 2014 Ford Fusion on College Park Road. A shooting occurred inside the stopped vehicle, at the time of the stop.The deputy was not involved in the shooting incident. Authorities are currently responding to a structure fire at the BP Chemical Company plant in Huger.Details are very limited this afternoon but we do know that the Charleston County Fire, Cainhoy Fire and Huger Fire Departments are on the scene at this time. No word on any injuries or what may have cause the fire to begin. We have a crew headed to the location and will bring you the latest as they become available.
