PAN; Griech. Komödiendichter der Mittleren Komödie; Middle Comedy; TLG Canon of Greek Authors and Works, Third Edition, pg. 110; Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 1 , 1867, p. 888: "Cratinus the Younger, an Athenian comic poet of the middle comedy, was a contemporary of Plato the philosopher (Diog. Laert. iii. 28,) and of Corydus (Athen. vi. p. 241), and therefore flourished during the middle of the 4th century B.C....."; Brill's New Pauly: Attic comedy writer of the 4th cent. BC (fr. eight and 10 point to the second half of the cent.). Of eight surviving titles, four suggest mythological subjects (Ὀμφάλη/‘Omphale’; Χείρων/ ‘Cheiron’; Γίγαντες/‘The Giants’ and Τιτᾶνες/‘The Titans’ may refer to the same play), the others hint at typical topics of the New Comedy: Θηρωμένη (‘The Hunted’); Ταραντῖνοι (‘The Citizens of Tarentum’); Ψευδυποβολιμαῖος (‘The Wrongly Accused One’); Πυθαγορίζουσα (‘The Disciple of Pythagoras’) points to a mockery of philosophers (cf. the mockery of Plato in fr. 10).
