What to Expect on Your First Visit

During your initial visit, you will be required to fill out paperwork in order to provide us with your complete medical history and details of your particular condition(s). The chiropractor will review your paperwork and will go over your history during the consultation. Then a complete physical assessment relevant to your condition(s) will be performed. The chiropractor will report to you his/her findings, diagnosis, prognosis and plan of management. Treatment is usually rendered on the first visit unless contraindicated. If chiropractic is not the right treatment for you, the chiropractor will refer you back to your family doctor or another appropriate health professional. Any questions or concerns you have regarding your condition(s) or treatment options will be answered to the best of our ability. Please allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for your initial visit.

PROPER JOINT FUNCTION IS CRITICAL FOR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Do you find that despite the use of stretching and rehabilitative exercises, certain muscles just don't loosen up properly? One reason for this annoying observation is that exercise and stretching cannot restore the loss of joint motion.

In order for muscles, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues to remain healthy, normal joint function is essential.

The major cause of a loss in joint motion is a previous inflammation produced by a sprain/strain or fracture. Normally, the condition is treated by physiotherapy and exercises in order to help muscles return to their normal strength. However, joint function is rarely considered and often remains abnormal!

All athletes (from elite to recreational) should have all joints examined for specific joint function. This examination would eliminate lost time, effort and poor performances caused by joint dysfunction. With normal joint movements, joint dysfunction pain syndromes will not develop nor will the muscles and ligaments tear as often.

With proper chiropractic diagnosis and care, athletes could reap potential benefits including improved range of motion, normal muscle function, improved coordination, better balance and fewer performance injuries. What are you waiting for? Don't let your time, money and career go to waste.

LOW BACK PAIN

Low Back Pain Causes:

  • strains/sprains/pulled muscles
  • sports injuries
  • repetitive stress
  • bad posture
  • disc (disk) herniation or degeneration
  • heavy lifting
  • motor vehicle accident (MVA)
  • workplace injury (WSIB)
  • slips and falls
  • pregnancy -arthritis

Low Back Pain Symptoms:

  • dull ache, throbbing, burning or sharp pain
  • pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in the leg and/or foot (sciatica)
  • hurts to lift or move
  • inflammation/spasm

Low Back Pain Relief & Treatment:

  • chiropractic manipulation
  • massage therapy and physiotherapy
  • Active Release Therapy
  • PNF stretching
  • core stability training
  • low back exercises
  • stretching, strengthening, and rehabilitation
  • laser therapy
  • acupuncture

All of these therapies are available. A combination of therapies will be integrated and tailored to your own specific needs in order to achieve best results.

TREATMENT OF STRAIN AND SPRAIN INJURIES

For these injuries, the rehabilitation process is divided into 3 general phases.

  • Phase 1 concentrates on pain control and early range of motion work. Controlling pain can involve ice therapy, laser therapy, IFC/TENS modalities, joint and soft tissue mobilization/manipulation, and medication. Range of motion work is directed by the health professional.
  • Phase 2 consists of restoring range of motion and increasing strength. Again, this needs to be directed by the health professional to avoid risk of injury and achieve optimal results.
  • Phase 3 focuses on the safe return to work / life duties and/or sports. The advancement through each phase is very patient-specific. Each program is different depending on the condition of the individual and is created by the health professional according to the patient's needs.

An appropriate degree of mechanical loading (i.e., therapy, stretching, exercise) is essential to the repair and maintenance of injured soft tissues and connective tissue-based structures (e.g., fascia, tendons, ligaments, capsules, articular cartilage, and intervertebral discs). The internal remodelling of these structures during repair/maintenance is largely directed by the physical forces that are imparted on them.

To sum up, if you have an injury, you should set up a consultation/examination as soon as possible so that the repairing process can take place quickly and correctly.

Dr. Cancelliere's goal is to address and correct specific conditions as opposed to the current mainstream norm of masking pain with medication or undergoing unnecessary, invasive procedures and surgeries without having first tried a more simplistic, natural approach. She gives patients her undivided attention while utilizing a variety of evidence-based techniques and rehabilitative protocols to suit the needs and comfort level of each patient.

Location: 10480 Islington Ave, Vaughan, ON (in the Kleinburg Village)

Treatments Include

Manipulation:

  • Precise procedure, generally applied by hand to the joints
  • Force and technique modified to patient age, stature and condition
  • Improves joint mobility by restoring the range of motion, reducing muscle hypertonicity thereby relieving pressure and tension

Mobilization:
More gentle than manipulation; utilizes less force and speed so that an audible 'pop' is usually not heard.

Soft Tissue Therapy:
For muscle aches, tendon injuries, nerve entrapments, repetitive strain injuries, etc. Techniques include trigger point technique, myofascial release, active release and deep tissue massage.

Stretching:

  • Static stretches: attempts to alleviate excessively tight muscles
  • PNF(proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation)- to decrease tone in tight muscle; to treat DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
  • Muscle Energy Technique utilizes very light muscular contractions in very specific directions to alter joint restriction and range of motion through altering the length of local musculature

Laser Therapy:
Treatment for acute and chronic pain conditions, arthritis, wound healing, addictions, and cosmetic revitalization. Lasers work by supplying energy to the body in the form of billions of photons of light. The body absorbs this laser light on a cellular level and transforms it into chemical energy, which the body then uses to commence its own tissue repairs. The bio-stimulating effect of laser therapy causes a decrease in inflammation and pain and an increase in tissue regeneration and healing.

Prescription Orthotics & Orthopaedic Shoes:
Biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. They reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. Symptoms of poor foot mechanics can include:

  • Localized foot pain
  • Bunions, hammer toes
  • Arch/heel pain
  • Leg/knee pain
  • Hip/back and even neck pain

Therapeutic Gradient Compression Hosiery:
Improves venous and lymphatic blood flow. The stockings are designed to deliver a controlled amount of pressure which is greatest at the ankle. This gradient pressure promotes better venous blood flow which in turn helps to control swelling, varicosities, leg fatigue and other problematic leg conditions. Those who experience any of the following conditions can benefit:

  • Tired, aching, fatigued legs
  • Swollen feet, ankles, and legs
  • People who stand or sit for long periods
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Moderate to severe varicose veins
  • Expectant mothers
  • Schlerotherapy
  • Lymphadema
  • Overweight
  • Family history of venous leg disorders

*Available in a variety of styles in updated fashion shades.

Exercise Prescription:
Dysfunctional soft tissues are either too short and tight or too long and weak. Most patients are required to undertake a series of exercises to stretch, strengthen, or simply to 'switch-on' particular muscles. Exercises can also be used to prevent conditions such as low back pain.

Active Rehabilitation:
After an injury, illness or surgery, you may need rehabilitation to regain your strength, mobility, fitness and balance.
