The Royal Wedding


On 20 October 2012, HRH Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, married Belgian Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy.

The religious wedding ceremony took place on 20 October in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg (Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg) in Luxembourg City.

The civil wedding took place on the eve in the Luxembourg City Town Hall.

The public had the opportunity to participate in a number of festivities around the wedding.

The wedding was broadcasted live on the Luxembourgish TV station RTL, as well as on the Belgian TV stations RTL-TVI and RTBF La Une, and the German TV station ZDF.

Friday 19 October 2012

  • 11 a.m.: Reception at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg (Grand Théâtre of the City of Luxembourg)
    This reception is hosted by the government in honour of HRH the Hereditary Grand Duke and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, in the presence of the country's youth representatives.

  • 3.30 p.m.: Civil wedding
    The civil wedding takes place in the Luxembourg City Town Hall, on the square Guillaume II (Knuedler). The mayor, Xavier Bettel, conducts the wedding.
    Giant screens are installed on the square Guillaume II for public viewing, on which spectators are able to see the procession between the grand-ducal palace and the town hall.

  • 8 p.m.: Gala dinner at the grand ducal palace
    The dinner is prepared together with Luxembourg chefs and pâtissiers, amongst which the renowned Luxembourgish cook Léa Linster, the first woman to have ever won the prestigious Bocuse d’Or award.

  • 11 a.m.: Religious wedding ceremony at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg (Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg)
    The religious wedding ceremony is celebrated by Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich.
    Giant screens are installed on the square Guillaume II for public viewing, on which spectators are able to follow the religious wedding ceremony live.

  • 1 p.m.: The bride and groom appear on the balcony of the grand-ducal palace, followed by a reception.

  • 8.20 p.m.: Fireworks display launched from "Trois Glands", in the presence of the bride and the groom, at the forecourt of the State Council (5, rue Sigefroi)

  • 8.45 p.m.: Public concerts on square Guillaume II
    The concert is opened by Belgian singer Selah Sue, followed by the Luxembourg Funk Soul collective Funky P.

Join the celebrations!

People can join a number of celebrations held in the context of the wedding. On 20 October 2012 public transport is free of charge in the Grand-Duchy.

  • Representatives from Luxembourgish youth movements and associations, as well as people who share their birthday with HRH the Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg (11/11/1981) or Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy (18/02/1984) and those who marry on 20 October 2012 have been invited by the government to join the reception in the Grand Théâtre.

  • The public is able to cheer the couple on their procession from the grand-ducal palace to the town hall to the civil wedding, as well as on their way back.

  • Giant screens are installed on the square Guillaume II for public viewing, where the procession is broadcasted live (not the civil wedding though).

Saturday 20 October 2012

  • Part of the Cathedral has been reserved for the public to witness the ceremony first hand.

  • Furthermore, giant screens are installed on the square Guillaume II for public viewing, on which spectators can follow the religious wedding ceremony live.

  • From 1 p.m. the bride and groom appear on the balcony of the grand-ducal palace to greet the crowd.

  • At 8.20 p.m. there ise a fireworks display from "Trois Glands". The best places to view the fireworks are from the Côte d’Eich, boulevard Ulveling, montée de Clausen and Pfaffenthal.

  • Between 8.45 and 12.15 p.m., two free concerts are binge played on the square Guillaume II. The concert is going to be opened by Belgian singer Selah Sue, followed by the Luxembourg Funk Soul collective Funky P.

  • Furthermore, pubs and cafés will be open until 3 a.m.

Sunday 21 October 2012

  • On Sunday, shops will be exceptionally open for extensive “After Wedding Shopping”. Make sure to discover the “Fournisseurs de la Cour”, shops and companies who have applied to deliver thier goods and services of exceptional quality to the grand ducal Court. Among others, porcelain manufacturer Villeroy et Boch has created a special limited edition bowl for the occasion of the Royal Wedding.

  • The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg will be open for visitors who wish to see the floral decoration installed for the wedding.

Tourism

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office offers a 3-day special programme for the wedding, which will take you to the wedding, but also make you discover Luxembourg City’s charms.

In general, should you decide to come to the wedding, be sure to discover what else Luxembourg has to offer.

The National Museum of History and Art has a special exhibition on display, featuring items from the silver chamber of the Luxembourg dynasty.

Congratulate the royal couple

The Luxembourg Confederation of Commerce (CLC) invites everyone who wants to transmit his best wishes to the royal couple to sign the giant congratulatory card, which is going to be on tour through the country between 28 September and 19 October 2012. Every signatory will be offered a glass of sparkling wine from Vinsmoselle, a special vintage for the Royal Wedding named “Cuvée spéciale mariage princier”.
