WASHINGTON (June 23, 2014) – Howard University today announced the appointment of Danielle R. Holley-Walker as the new dean of the historic School of Law, a principal architect in the nation’s progress toward achieving equal justice under law, particularly in the field of civil rights.

Holley-Walker’s appointment as dean culminates a national search. She serves as a law professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at University of South Carolina Law School.

“Dean Holley-Walker is an excellent addition to our campus community,” said Howard University Interim President Wayne A.I. Frederick. “As an accomplished scholar and respected administrator, Dean Holley-Walker combines a demonstrated record of success with a keen knowledge of contemporary academic programs in law schools.”

Holley-Walker, who teaches civil procedure, federal courts and administrative law, said she is honored to be named dean of Howard Law and to build on its legacy of producing lawyers who are transformative leaders and social engineers.

“Howard’s law school remains a defining force in American jurisprudence and will continue to play an unparalleled role in advancing social justice. As we look to the future, we must establish a robust agenda for the 21st century and beyond. I look forward to working closely with faculty, students, staff and alumni as we chart the future together.”

With a research focus on issues of educational equity and public school governance, Dean Holley-Walker has published articles on a range of civil rights and education issues, including the No Child Left Behind Act, charter school policies, desegregation plans and affirmative action in higher education.

Dean Holley-Walker holds a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard University. She also clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit for Chief Judge Carl E. Stewart. Prior to her teaching, Holley-Walker practiced civil litigation at Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, in Houston. She also taught at the Hofstra University School of Law.

Since 2012, the law school has been led by Interim Dean and Law Professor Okianer Christian Dark, who succeeded Dean Kurt L. Schmoke when he was appointed vice president and general counsel at the University.
