I am huge fan of the Planet of the Apes saga. So much so, that when Insight Editions announced a new poster book, I knew I must possess it. Planet of the Apes Saga: The Poster Collection is a collection of 40 removable posters that span from the original 1968 film to the present day Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The posters are 12x16 and presented with breathtaking clarity that will make any fan go ape (pun intended). However, what really threw me for a loop was that not all the images here are posters. Many of the images are Planet of the Apes lobby cards from the 1968 film, the 2001 film, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  A book of lobby cards itself would have been great. They do exist, trust me. I have seen them, both in the real world and online. The pictures included here are incredible. The details are astounding and John Chambers’ makeup has never looked better. The one that I liked the best, which I had never seen, was the overhead shot of the human zoo with Julius (Buck Kartalian) cleaning the cages.

With that being said, There are numerous foreign posters that illustrate Apes’ reach and what ploys were used in marketing. I also appreciate that Insight Editions included an Insert poster from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the likes of which have not been used by Hollywood for ages. Further more, Insight Editions included Dawn of the Planet of the Apes propaganda posters from the film.

Despite it not being strictly a book of actual movie posters, this Apes fan is bananas for this book. Even with the 2001 posters and the lack of my favorite Apes poster (the German rendition of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (seen here)), it is a worthy edition to my library. Perhaps Insight Editions was only testing the waters. Another Apes film (in 2016) is already in the works and the recent one is cleaning up at theaters. Then again, I am may be in a very small niche who just wants both a book on lobby cards and one for posters. Regardless, this a great book, for a the old fans or for the next generation that keeps discovering this incredible franchise.
