UPDATE: Coroner Identifies Baby in Fatal Dog Attack

DAYTON -- The Montgomery County Coroner's Office tells us they have ruled the death of an infant-baby as an "accident."

The coroner's office says seven-month-old Jonathan Quarles Jr. of Indianapolis died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Quarles was reported dead on July 20 from his step-grandmother's Riverside home after her pit-bull type breed attacked and killed the boy. The American Staffordshire Terrier dog is registered to the address where the attack happened, according to Montgomery County Animal Control.

On Monday, homicide detectives were back at the scene of where the attack happened. They removed a large metal chain from the backyard, two dog cages, and a bag full of evidence for their investigation.

The homicide squad handles the death of any infant.

A family member of the step-grandmother, Kimiko Hardy, said their family needs prayers.

"I don't have all the details, but one thing I know is the family needs prayers," said Hardy's stepbrother, Michael Harris.

According to court documents, this isn't the only attack by the family dog. On June 3rd, a Dayton woman filed a police report after claiming her beagle was attacked by the same dog.

"It just really irks me because this could have been taken care of," said Isabelle Crickmore.

Crickmore has filed a misdemeanor complaint against Hardy.

It is unclear if Hardy will face any charges.

The dog was never quarantined from the first attack because officials only track human cases.

Officials with Montgomery County say the dog is in the hands of the Animal Resource Center. They wouldn't comment on any part of the case.  They say the dog is still alive pending further investigation.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- The baby killed by his grandmother's dog on Sunday has been identified by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office as Jonathon Quarles Jr. of Indianapolis.

A family spokesman, the Rev. Victor Lee, says the grandmother was watching the child for the day when the dog leaped a gate and attacked. The woman tried to get the dog away from the boy but was unsuccessful.

Baby Dies After Dog Attack on Riverside Drive

DAYTON -- A 7-month-old baby boy has died after being attacked by a dog Sunday afternoon.

Dayton Police were called to the 2000 block of Riverside Drive after the report of a dog attack.

Dayton Police Sgt. Charles Anderson says the pit bull dog was a family pet.

"Information from other family members says the dog has been a pleasant animal for the family," Anderson said.

Anderson says the unidentified infant was in the care of his grandmother at the time.

Family on scene said the baby boy was from Indiana.

"They don't understand why the dog went off and attacked the small child," said Sgt. Anderson.

A family spokesman, the Rev. Victor Lee, said the family told him the dog jumped over a gate and then attacked the boy. He says the grandmother tried to get the dog off, but couldn't.

"Family needs prayers right now," said Lee.

A Dayton police report indicates police have responded to the address for a control of dogs prior to this incident.

On June 3, Isabelle Crickmore of Dayton was walking her beagle in front of 2219 Riverside Drive when a pit bull attacked her dog.

"She had three lacerations, 11 staples," said Crickmore.

There is a criminal misdemeanor complaint against the grandmother for that attack. Court documents show a pre-trial hearing for Crickmore's complaint was postponed last week.

"It just really irks me because this could have been taken care of," said Crickmore.
