Ebola-ravaged Guinea picked to host 2023 African Nations Cup

Members of the Guinea youth football team L'Etoile de Guinee made a plea to stop the Ebola epidemic earlier this week.
Guinea will host the 2023 African Nations Cup.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia -- Guinea was chosen to host the 2023 African Nations Cup in an unscheduled vote on Saturday, with African football head Issa Hayatou describing the surprise decision as a display of "solidarity" with the Ebola-hit country.

The Confederation of African Football announced Cameroon as host of the 2019 Nations Cup and Ivory Coast for 2021, but wasn't scheduled to vote on who would stage the 2023 tournament.

"CAF wanted to show solidarity with the people of Guinea in this hard...

Kwesi Appiah sacking by Ghana shows need for Africa to support its managers

Kwesi Appiah hopes to guide Ghana to a third straight win over the United States.
The World Cup was a disaster, but once Kwesi Appiah survived that he should have been given more time.

Kwesi Appiah's tenure as Ghana's manager actually ended on June 26. That morning, the day of Ghana's decisive World Cup match against Portugal, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari were suspended from the squad. Boateng was suspended over claims that he insulted Appiah, while Muntari allegedly attacked a member of the organisation. Whatever happened, it was clear that Appiah was not as in control as a coach should be.

Ghana had been dealing with infighting, player protests over bonuses, and...
