Runway, your way: How to wear fall’s fab textures

Wonder how to work catwalk cool into your own closet? Here’s how to translate the trends for real life.

If the idea of shelling out your hard-earned money on fly-by-night trends makes you wince, you’re gonna love the use of texture seen all over fall’s runways.
See, trading in your usual cashmere for something nubby, or opting for your usual black slacks, only trying a pair with leather or velvet details, allows you to step up your style game, without the risk of buying something you’ll only wear once or twice.

We saw nubby sweaters at Balenciaga, beaded dresses at Jenny Packham, shearling mixed with perforated knit at Alexander Wang, mohair paired with tweed at Max Mara, dresses made of crinkled metallic leather and plastic at Miu Miu and slacks covered in black lace at Richard Chai Love.

Here are nine looks that add different textures to basics you’ll wear again and again. Fall shopping? Oh, it’s on.

Look closely, and you’ll see the metallic gold embroidery adds not only texture, but skulls to this pretty party dress.

YOUR WAY:

Coats: On the hunt for a new jacket this season? Choose a classic style – say, belted shawl collar, car coat or moto – but select one with a little texture, like embroidered flowers, quilted leather or a mixture of fabrics (faur fur with wool and satin, for example). The result is your new anything but basic basic.

Tops: No need to go wild this season, in terms of trying out the texture trend. Stick with the neutrals you already favor – black, white and gray – but look for a little something extra, like a little fringe, nubby knits or a boucle that practically begs to be touched.

Olive & Oak fringe cardigan, $68, Nordstrom.com; Alice + Olivia ombre open-front cardigan, $396, Nordstrom.com; Zara boucle knit hooded vest, $99.90, zara.com

Pants: Willing to add just a touch of daring to your fall wardrobe? A texturized pant will do the trick. Look for mixed fabrics (like leather and fine knit), fabrics like jacquard or brocade and blended multi-colored knits that lend unexpected interest to basic designs.

Runway, your way: 3 fall looks we want to wear now

Wonder how to work catwalk cool into your own closet? Here’s how to translate the trends for real life.

Don’t let the temperature fool you. Sure, your AC is cranked and you’re actually looking forward to someone nominating you to take the ice bucket challenge, but, if you judge by the inventory in clothing stores now, summer is a memory and we’ve fully entered fall territory.

However, while we can’t wait to try out all the new autumn runway trends, faux fur, velvet and capes will just have to wait a while longer. Luckily, there are styles we would be more than happy to don tomorrow. Here are three fall looks from the 2014 collections, along with more affordable options, you can wear now. Just be sure to change before you dump that bucket of ice water over your head, OK?

fall fashion trends

Mirror, mirror on the wall, this Diesel Gold Black dress is the fairest of them all. ( Photo by Arun Nevader/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

THE RUNWAY: Diesel Gold Black, fall 2014
Sparkles were trendy for fall (was that a cheer we just heard from your inner girlie girl?), as evidenced at the Diesel Gold Black runway show. An LBD with shiny mirrored embellishments? We refuse to wait until the leaves turn to wear that trend.

YOUR WAY: BCBGMaxAzria Gabriella mirror-embroidered sheath, $184, bcbg.com

A traditional black sheath dress gets all sorts of fab updates with an interesting neckline, mirror-sequined embellishments and shiny stripe details. Wear it now with sandals, and, when it gets cooler, add ankle boots and a moto jacket for a whole different vibe.

THE RUNWAY: Lela Rose, fall 2014
Texturized fabrics, like this embellished lace overlay dress from Lela Rose, were trendy on the fall catwalks.

YOUR WAY: Korovilas Estella embroidered lace sheath dress, $545, nordstrom.com

A pretty pink embroidered lace dress is on trend, but still classic, when it comes in a demure knee-length silhouette. We love this dress for a late summer wedding. In the thick of fall, throw on a cardi for a polished office look.

THE RUNWAY: Adeam, fall 2014
While the midi remains hot for fall, a ‘60s-esque mini dress is also trendy, like this modernized look with leather trim from Adeam.

YOUR WAY: J Brand Ready to Wear Charriere dress, $208, neimanmarcus.com

A swingin’ minidress looks ready for fall 2014, with cool cap sleeves and peep-toe ankle boots. When it gets cold, swap in knee-high boots or tights for a look that still rocks.

Runway, your way: How to wear summer’s metallic trend

Wonder how to work catwalk cool into your own closet? Here’s how to translate the trends for real life.

You say you love glitz? You crave glamour? You need a little flash in your life? Well, go ahead and get your shine on this summer—the metallic trend is back.
At Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Versace, Givenchy and more, the gold, silver and bronze (not to mention red, blue, green and purple) rush was on during spring 2014 runway presentations. And with so many options, you can go all-out disco, stick with a simple metallic shoe or fall somewhere in between with an extra shiny skirt or top.

Here are nine styles sure to brighten your day.

spring metallic trend

Reem Acra’s shiny gold dress has us coming down with a serious case of disco fever. ( Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Mercedes-Benz)

THE RUNWAY: Reem Acra, spring 2014

Love a great ’70s moment? This glittery gold one-shoulder gown (plus that giant hair) would have fit in perfectly at Studio 54.

YOUR WAY:

Dress for success: Disco divas, here’s your chance to hit the dance floor in metallic glory. Pick a fun, flirty and shirt frock in your favorite shiny shade – blue, gold, silver, you name it. Add simple accessories and bust out your best moves. Consider this your new LBD.

Madewell shimmer T-shirt dress, $59.99, madewell.com; Tabitha golden panes shift dress, $59.95, anthropologie.com; Minkpink Blame In On the Boogie metallic dress, $73.36, asos.com

From top to bottom: One piece of a shiny metallic style will instantly brighten up any outfit. Try a gold skirt, bronze top or printed pant to go glitzy without taking it to tacky territory.

Rules of Etiquette metallic pleat skirt, $58, Nordstrom.com; Boden metallic top, $74, bodenusa.com; Berek Marissa metallic-print pants, $58, neimanmarcus.com

Just a hint of glint:
True, a swimsuit is not going to hide every lump, bump and bulge, but new fabrics, smart details and the right prints and patterns can help you look slimmer – and feel more confident – as you run to the beach or take a dive off the board. Think of it as Spanx for the pool.
