Kalki Koechlin’s feminist monologue for #VogueEmpower at FNO

image

#VogueEmpower, Vogue India’s initiative to spread awareness on women’s safety and empowerment, has roped in actor Kalki Koechlin to help spread the word.

Koechlin’s monologue is an ode to women everywhere who are bound by traditional patriarchy. Powerful and poetic, the act illustrates the status of women in society today through historical comparisons and personal anecdotes. It has only been performed for a closed audience in Delhi earlier this year. But on September 4, the actor is bringing her evocative performance to Mumbai’s Canvas Laugh Club.

"[When I was asked to do this] I thought, what can I do that hasn’t already been said…The only way you can do that is by being personal and going to your personal space," the actor explained. "So I opened up all my diaries and looked through all my writings and some of them are straight lifted from the bits of my diaries because I like writing."

Two of a kind

September 4, 2014 marks the sixth edition of Fashion’s Night Out and the second of the annual event at Palladium in Mumbai. To celebrate the milestone, we asked a fashion designer and an artist duo to bring their flair to this year’s merchandise

TOTE BY MASABA GUPTA

image

When she burst onto the fashion scene a few years ago with her Indi-proud colours and prints, she heralded a new chapter in Indian fashion. We asked Masaba Gupta to bring that trademark appeal to her design of the Fashion’s Night Out tote.

The trendy canvas totes have been designed exclusively for FNO 2014. It’s a great accessory that can brighten up a monochrome outfit. It has an easy going energy and the colours, print and rendering are typical of Masaba’s style.

Tell us about your thought process and concept.

The hot air balloon signifies rising, and the cup of tea tied to it signifies how we remain attached to the smaller, simpler things in life. The colours and patterns used are the label’s trademark.
