Happy First Day of Summer! These Tips Will Keep You Cool in the Heat

by boiron on June 20th, 2012

Summer officially begins tonight at 7:09 p.m. EDT, and for much of the east coast, including Boiron’s U.S. headquarters in Newtown Square, Pa., it brings with it record-breaking temperatures and high humidity. From Boston to Atlanta, cities along the I-95 corridor will experience 90-degree plus readings for the next several days. To protect your health and the health of your loved ones, we offer these helpful tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

- Drink more non-alcoholic fluids, regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. However, don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar (these actually cause you to lose more body fluid), and avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

– Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.

– Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

– Never leave anyone or any pets in a closed, parked vehicle.

– Check regularly on infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, people who have a mental illness, and those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure.

– Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.

– Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, non-alcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.

– Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).

All of us here at Boiron wish you and your family a healthy and safe start to summer! Be careful, know your limits, and enjoy your summertime activities!
