Ninety-three percent of Americans support labeling of genetically modified or engineered foods, according to a January 2013 poll by The New York Times. Seventy-five percent are concerned about the effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on their health, and 37% fear such foods cause cancer or allergies.

Download Adobe ReaderThis Friday, the November general election ballot will be mailed to voters in the state of Washington. On the ballot is Initiative 522. If passed into law by voters, I-522 would require foods that have been genetically engineered or that contain genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled as such. The state’s shoppers will receive more information about what’s in their food and more control over their shopping decisions.
