Keeping Your Cool in this Summer Heat

by boiron on July 22nd, 2011

We heard earlier this week that 48 out of the 50 states were experiencing temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit! Such intense heat, which is supposed to last through the weekend in many places, increases the likelihood that you or a loved one could experience heat-related conditions such as sunstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and severe dehydration if you are not careful. Hot temps are especially hazardous for the elderly, family pets and persons, who have special health issues. What are some of the ways you can stay cool and comfortable when the heat is on? We listed a few below but you can share your own advice with us here or on our Facebook page.

• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes preferably cotton based.
• Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.
• Exercise outdoors in early morning or late evening when the temps are cooler.
• Listen to your body. If you experience cramps, dizziness, headaches, nausea and thirst while exercising or working outdoors, stop what you are doing and find a place to cool off.
• If you or anyone else are showing signs of heat stroke, such as an altered mental state, not sweating, or nausea, seek medical attention immediately.
• Spend time in an air-conditioned place like the mall, public library or a movie theater during the hottest part of the day if you don’t have air conditioning at home.
• Stay out of the direct sun.
• Call and check on your elderly friends, family and neighbors.
• Know your limits and stay indoors if possible.
