Our Top 5 Natural and Simple Ways to Keep Allergies at Bay

by boiron on May 11th, 2010

It’s throw-open-the-windows, plant-a-beautiful-garden, and enjoy-America’s-favorite-pastime season. Unfortunately for most of us, it’s also my-allergies-are-disrupting-my-life season. Is the tissue box on your desk constantly empty? Is your nose raw and red, and your eyes so watery that the computer screen in front of you is a blur?  Even though allergies may be inevitable, they don’t have to spoil your spring plans. Let’s start with our top five natural, yet simple, ways that can help keep allergy symptoms at bay. In the coming week, we’ll share five other just as natural ways to help you through the worst of it. See which ones work for you, and feel free to share with us some ones that we’ve missed by commenting on this post.

1. Clean your floors often.

Thoroughly clean your carpets, rugs, floors and curtains regularly. Use a HEPA vacuum cleaner—its special filter traps very fine dust and allergen particles. And replacing carpet with wood, tiles and other resilient flooring is always a good idea.

2. Reduce clutter.

All of your small collectibles may add character to your home, but they also attract dust. Keep allergens lowered by reducing the amount of dust-collectors such as tufted furnishings, fabric wall décor and hard-to-wash surfaces, and put loose items in plastic containers.

3. Establish a smoke-free environment.

Do not smoke in your home or permit others to do so. If that’s not possible, at least make sure the area is well-ventilated.

4. Wash bed sheets and linens often.

Wash bed linens in 130-degree-plus temperatures each week to help control cat/dog dander and dust mites.

5. Use an air filter.

A HEPA purifier will remove airborne particles such as dust mites and pollen from your home.
