The early morning show, which airs at 5.58am on weekdays and at 8.58am on Sundays, lasts 90 seconds and features a different bird's song each morning.

"On my journeys round the world, I'm as fascinated by the natural life as I am by the people I meet," said Palin, who also presented the BBC travel series Around the World in 80 Days and Full Circle.

"Early morning birdsong is often the first thing to alert me to the fact that I'm somewhere new and different."

Palin will join fellow presenters Miranda Krestovnikoff, Chris Packham, Liz Bonnin and Sir David Attenborough.

The show has previously featured songs of British birds, but the new series will focus on birds from around the world.

Attenborough will launch the first episode with the New Guinea native blue bird-of-paradise, which he has encountered on his travels.

The new series of Tweet of the Day begins on September 1.
