Crist and Scott knock each other on wealth in final Florida debate

There was no fighting over a fan in Tuesday's Florida gubernatorial debate. But there were plenty of fireworks over other issues, most notably which candidate has led a more privileged life.

In their final debate before the midterm election, former governor Charlie Crist (D) repeatedly cast Republican Gov. Rick Scott's wealth in a negative light. Scott parried those attacks by claiming Crist enjoyed a much more comfortable upbringing than he did.

Crist slammed Scott for traveling in a "private jet" and living in an "oceanfront mansion" as evidence he is out of touch with most Floridians.

Scott told Crist, "You grew up with money." The governor added, "I know what its like to watch a parent lose the only family car we had."

The debate, hosted by CNN and WJXT, came six days after one of the most bizarre incidents in debate history. Scott initially refused to come out after Crist had a fan set up under his podium, which Scott's campaign claimed was against the rules.

There were no fans on Tuesday. Moderator Jake Tapper asked the candidates if they were comfortable and neither candidate said no.

Scott's net worth was more than $132 million last year; Crist's was $1.2 million.

Scott, a businessman before being elected governor in 2010, argued that he came from much more humble beginnings than Crist. The debate grew heated and deeply personal.

"You can't tell my story. And I'm not going to tell yours," said Crist at one point.

Crist said he has not released his wife's tax returns because he believes in a "woman's right to choose."

Polls show a close race. Crist, who was a Republican when he was governor, explained that he left the party because of its "kidnapping" at the hands of the tea party.

"What is he saying this year that he actually believes?" asked Scott.

Both candidates cast each other as poor stewards of the economy. Asked whether they believe climate change is man-made, Crist said yes. Scott dodged the question.
