Gharti Magar’s spot-kick helps Nepal beat Kuwait in AFC U-16 C’ship

Nepal has secured 2-1 victory against Kuwait in its second match of the ongoing AFC U-16 Championship played at Muangthong Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday.

While the match was heading towards a 1-1 draw, Nepali captain Bimal Gharti Magar converted a penalty into goal, sealing victory for Nepal.

Magar was also announced the man-of-the-match in today’s game.

Nepal was awarded the spot-kick as Anjan Bista was fouled inside the D-box in the 82nd minute.

Nepal had taken an early lead in the second minute as Kuwait’s captain Shabaib Al Khaldi scored an own goal.

However, Kuwait’s S. Al Bariki equalised the score in the 75th minute through a spot-kick.

With the win, Nepal’s chances to qualify for the next round remained alive as it had also played 1-1 draw against defending champion Uzbekistan on Sunday.

Nepal has conceded four points after two matches.

Now, Nepal will take on North Korea on September 11, under Group C matches.

Altogether 16 teams are divided into four Groups A, B, C and D. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages.
Similarly, the top four finishers of the championship will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2015.

The Nepali squad comprises goalkeepers Roman Rasaili and Srijan Shrestha; mid-fielders Hemant Thapa Magar, Kiran Sunar, Anil Rai, Sanjok Rai, Bikash Thapa, Ravi Bhandari, Jonom Man Ligal and Tejendra Pun; defenders Aakash Thapa, Amit Tamang, Sudan Thapa, Dinesh Rajbanshi, Gaurav Budhathoki and Rupesh Tamang; and the forwards Bimal Gharti Magar, Anjan Bista, Sujit Gurung, Shiva Subedi and Sunil Bal.

Bal Gopal Maharjan is the head coach and Dinesh Byanjankar the manager of the squad.
