Lexington Market will stay up late on Wednesday

Lexington Market typically turns its lights down at 6 p.m. But the 232-year-old market is staying open late on Wednesday for a special food-focused event.

Light Up Lexington will pair up market vendors with restaurants like Dooby's, Clementine and Farmstead Grill on Wednesday for an evening of friendly competition and entertainment.

The event is designed to showcase the municipal market's appeal for new audiences, according to Phil Han, the owner of Dooby's in Mount Vernon, who is organizing the first-time event along with the Bromo Tower Arts & Entertainment District and Lexington Market.

"It was really easy to get restaurants involved," said Han. "It really shows how excited the local food community is about the potential of Lexington Market."

Other participating restaurants and eateries include Blue Pit BBQ, Alewife, The Charmery and Hersh's. Participating Lexington Market vendors include Faidley's Seafood, Park's Hamburger, Italian Stallion, Berger's Bakery, Mexican Delight and...

Woodberry Kitchen recalls products made without proper approval

Woodberry Kitchen is recalling some of its products, not because of illnesses or other health-related issues but because they were made without the proper approvals.

The recall includes certain containers of ketchup, pickled kohlrabi, pickled romanesco, pickled fish peppers and pickled cauliflower.

"The recall was initiated after it was discovered that these products were being manufactured and sold without state licensed approval. The manufacture of these items was immediately halted until such time that approval is obtained for their manufacture," Woodberry said in a release. "Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Woodberry Kitchen at 410-464-8000."

The Sun reported in early October that Shoo-Fly Diner, owned by Woodberry, was temporarily shut down by the Baltimore City Health Department after it was discovered the restaurant lacked all the licensing necessary for...

Mussel Bar coming to Harbor East, and free beer on Election Day in Mount Washington

The Washington-based restaurateur Robert Wiedmaier, whose restaurants include Brasserie Beck and his flagship, Marcel's, is bringing his Mussel Bar & Grille concept to Baltimore.

For his first foray into Baltimore, Wiedmaier has chosen the Harbor East location where Townhouse Kitchen lasted for less than two years. That restaurant, like Mussel Bar, was a first-time operation by an out-of-town restaurant group. Wiedmaier said he’s not worried about being perceived as an outsider.

";We’re just going to go in there and give great friendly service and embrace the locality of Baltimore,"; Wiedmaier said. “I’ve always loved Baltimore. Very few people you meet in Washington were born and raised in Washington. It’s full of suits, and it’s very conservative. People are from Baltimore.";

TruTV bar 'swap' show with Holy Frijoles airs Wednesday

Holy Frijoles in Hampden is the subject of a cable TV show airing Wednesday night on the TruTV network.

The one-hour show, titled "Barmageddon," is a variation of "Wife Swap," the reality show in which two very different kind of families exchange matriarchs. In "Barmageddon," it's the owners of very different bars who are swapped out.

In the Baltimore episode, which taped in January, Holy Frijoles owner Geoffrey Danek took his laid-back management style to Frederick's on Fleet for three nights of filming, while Frederick's part-owner Jim Saufley, a part-time boxing coach, brought his stricter style to Hampden.

The Baltimore episode is the pilot, which partly explains the long gap between taping and airing. A TruTV spokeswoman said the episode is a "sneak peek" of the series before it launches in December.

In a clip from the show on the TruTV website, Danek is seen alienating the gang at Frederick's when he tries to remove a stuffed deer head from the bar's wall.

We don't know how the...
