Review
Starring a couple of brawny lead characters with puny heads and huge guns, Doom Troopers is a testosterone-fueled game, patterned after Contra, and is bursting at the seams with blood, guts and muscle. Enemies are such fearsome creatures as reanimated corpses, massively built mutants and beings of flesh, iron and stone.
Killing an enemy takes several shots, and deaths are graphic displays of sinewy bone and sloshing blood. Bosses are mean and nasty and very tough to kill. This game is not for the faint of heart or for gamers who thought Contra and its sequels were impossible to beat.
Doom Troopers is indeed harder and bloodier than Contra III: The Alien Wars, Contra Hard Corps and other games in the Contra series, but it's not as much fun or as finely programmed. For example, the characters are more unwieldy and harder to control, aiming the weapon(s) diagonally is more cumbersome, and the weapons are less varied and not as much fun to use. Also, there are too many blind spots you can jump into and get your character killed, making for a frustrating, unfair experience. Despite its bluster and its big guns approach, Doom Troopers comes up limp.
Graphics
While weapons variety is lacking, there are plenty of colorfully exotic visuals. Certain characters and terrain are a little fuzzy and short on detail, but there are plenty of graphical treats throughout.
Sound
The soundtrack and effects are as big and blustery as the gameplay.
Enjoyment
Killing bad guys is sort of fun, but the game lacks the fine craftsmanship and smooth difficulty progression of Contra III: The Alien Wars.
Replay Value
Certain levels and bosses are frustrating, but the game can be beaten. Once you do beat it, however, you probably won't be coming back.
