Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Very odd not to see Supernatural on this list. It was second last week, now nowhere? Seems strange.

  • Alan

Really disappointed that Happy Endings doesnt get a bigger boost.

I was really sure that a big chunk of HE viewers were watching New Girl live and DVR-ing Happy Endings.

  • DW

hmmm. dont count out Nashville and last resort yet. those numbers are impressive.

  • dantas

And that’s why 90210 will unfortunately get a final short sixth season next year….

  • Jere

Any where I could get arrows and supernaturals numbers?

  • DW

@ alan happy endings wasnt on this is from two weeks ago.

  • Alan

Sorry ignore my above comment, I just realized these stats are from before HE’s season began. Let’s hope in the next round of stats that it is true.

  • Alan

I am curious about something, though….Given that most people fast forward through the commercials on a DVR recording, do networks care less about the post-DVR numbers?

I think they are more important than the overnights because they show how many people actually watch a show. But on the other hand, isn’t the 18-49 demo numbers mostly important for ad revenue purposes? And if people are skippings ads, what does it matter?

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

  • Michael

Geordiegirl1967, fans rather watch LIVE, that’s rather a good thing!

  • Michael

    OMFG, at Nashville’s gains! o.O

  • Tjw

Arrow and Suoernatural both had really good numbers that week, so they probably didn’t have huge DVR increases.

  • Tyler

Hey, is there a list of L+3 numbers? I thought you guys used to report that? Is there anyway to start?

  • Flame

Alan: It has been mentioned that advertisers mostly care about the Commercial Live + 3 Days numbers. Those are usually not available to the public, but are close to the actual numbers reported here.

Also, important for renewal are the relative standings of the shows within a network, and those usually do not change from L+SD to L+3D to L+7D, just the absolute numbers grow higher.

  • Steph

    Good for NCIS =)

  • Sarah

    Bones did okay.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Hey, is there a list of L+3 numbers? I thought you guys used to report that? Is there anyway to start?”

We never saw them in regular reports, we only reposted press releases from the networks containing them.

If the pattern of previous seasons holds up, now that Live+7 ratings are available network PR will stop putting out press releases with Live+3 ratings in favor of the bigger numbers in Live+7 viewing.

  • Sarah

    I was hoping for 3.0.

  • Stefan

Are these numbers also available for cable?

  • Tyson

“Given that most people fast forward through the commercials on a DVR recording, do networks care less about the post-DVR numbers?”

    Absolutely.

“But on the other hand, isn’t the 18-49 demo numbers mostly important for ad revenue purposes?”

    Absolutely.

“And if people are skipping ads, what does it matter?”

It doesn’t. Advertisers hate DVR users for that reason.

  • Tyler

    @Bill Gorman

    Unfortunate but understandable.
