Soniya Agarwal is in the city, shooting for Fazil's new movie. VIJAY GEORGE catches up with her in between shots for a tete-a-tete.

THE GAL from Punjab has made a stunning impact down south. Life is going good for Soniya Aggarwal with whopper hits happening in quick succession. Still, she is not wasting time resting on her laurels. Instead, she is conscientiously planning her career moves and choosing scripts "in which my main concern will be if I can do full justice to the character."
Soniya feels that "wonderful things have been happening in her life for the past couple of years." She was already into modelling, when Zee TV selected her as an in-house artist.
Punjabi serials
"Five of us were chosen by the channel. There were dance and acting classes and we did act in some Punjabi serials. But something great was not materialising. So we decided to call it quits. I did have plans to get into Bollywood, but things did not work out. It was around the same time that an offer came my way for a Telugu movie. The film was with Abbas and Vineeth and was called Nee Premakai."
But it was the smashing success of `Kaadhal Kondein' that gave her a head start in Tamil filmdom. With films like `Madurae', `Kovil', 'Success' and the recent blockbuster `7G Rainbow Colony', she is regarded as hot property in Kodambakkam.
Soniya is thrilled by the fact that "I have been accepted here. But with success, expectations tend to go up. That makes me a bit nervous and at the same time, more responsible."
Has she adjusted to the Tamilian ways and styles? "Right now the learning process is on," she laughs. "To start with, I do like rice and rasam a lot now. Jokes apart, it is not easy feeling comfortable with a different culture and language. One tends to become more conscious about everything. Anyway, for me, it has been a nice experience so far."
But some things irritate her . Like gossip, for instance. "The media tends to link people the moment you go out with your friends. That is frustrating."
Fine. But, is she in love with, hmm... anyone?
"I'm in love with everyone," she retorts. Is marriage on the cards? "Not now, for sure. Right now I am focused on my career."
"There are certain things that you have to take in your stride when you are anointed a star. The disgusting thing is that you need to act even when you are not facing the camera, most of the time."
When she is not shooting, Soniya prefers to sleep. "I do go the gym every evening. And I do love shopping."
Munnar a favourite
She had no problems doing the shopping round in Kochi, where she is shooting for Fazil's new Tamil film, except for once when she was mobbed. "One of my favourite spots in Kerala is Munnar, where the phone never rings and it's great to spend some time cut off from the outside world." Her film opposite Srikkant, `Sathurangam', is the next to come. Her Telugu movie is due to roll soon. More projects in Tamil will follow suit.
With all these assignments in the various south Indian languages, does she miss Punjab? "Of course, I do. Isn't that natural?"
What is the best thing about Soniya Aggarwal on her assessment? "I am really flexible and not stubborn. Perhaps, that helps me a lot as an actress."
