(South Surrey, BC) – Wheelchair Tennis

Sarah HunterBefore Sarah’s accident in 1997 she was active in many sports, including representing Canada on the women’s field lacrosse team. Despite her injury, which left her an incomplete quadriplegic, Sarah was resilient. After taking a few years to become comfortable with her disability, Sarah’s drive to include sport in her life began to surface again. She made her way to BC Wheelchair Sports and their “Bridging the Gap” and “Have A Go Day” initiatives and after trying several sports instantly connected with tennis. Three months later she was off to Florida to participate in her first competition.

Sarah excelled and her first comeback was completed after qualifying for the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. Sarah maintained her high level of performance throughout the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and into early 2011 but 2011 would prove to be a trying year. In her quest for a third straight Paralympic appearance, an accident with her doubles partner left her with an injured left shoulder and broken left wrist that would stop her short of her London goal. Sarah was forced to miss the remainder of the 2011 and most of the 2012 season, causing her ranking to fall out of the top 15 for the first time in eight years.

After some time away from the game to rehab and with no specific goal to return to play, Sarah’s primary focus was to begin to regain her independence and quality of life. Through this process, Sarah found that she was missing tennis in a new way. She started hitting a ball just for fun but soon missed the competition. Sarah decided to push harder in her rehab with a new goal in mind: to return better than she had left. The process was slow at first but with a new coach and doubles partner, Sarah, at the age of 48, has re-entered the top 5 in Quad singles and reached her highest ever ranking in Quad doubles (number three in the world), completing her comeback.
