IMPAIRMENT
In 1984, four days before his 11th birthday, he went to the zoo with some of his school mates. They approached the enclosure of an Asian black bear and put their hands on the bars of the enclosure. Before they had time to react, the bear grabbed his right arm in its mouth and began pulling. As his friends tried to pull him to safety his arm was torn off by the bear. Despite losing a large amount of blood, an ambulance arrived fast enough to save him and he underwent extensive surgery. After recovering, he returned to school and learned to write and draw with his left hand. (ukrinform.ua, 05 Sep 2012)
