HB 657, if passed, will allow an earlier start to the school year. Reasoning provided in the bill text says an earlier start date is needed for school districts to be able to end the first semester prior to the winter break. But Florida law already allows the first semester to end before the winter break and school districts currently have total control as to they schedule the required instructional hours each year. This bill is not needed to meet the alleged goal of the bill sponsor. If passed, school will begin one to two weeks earlier than current law allows. Send an email now!
