What to Look For in a Boiler Engineer
Whether you need to repair, service or install a boiler, it’s essential that you make sure you hire a qualified professional to do the work. A faulty or incorrectly installed boiler can be costly to fix and poses a real risk to your health – certified boiler engineers will make sure your boiler runs safely and efficiently. Depending on what fuel you use to power your boiler, choose one of the following engineers.
Gas Safe Registered Engineers
Gas boiler engineers need to be registered with Gas Safe. Registration is a legal requirement in the UK for anyone installing, repairing or servicing gas appliances and services. There are over 12,000 Gas Safe registered engineers in the UK, make sure yours has a valid Gas Safe ID card before you hire them to work on your gas boiler.
If you own a solid fuel burning boiler (for wood or coal), it’s a good idea to hire a member of HETAS to install, service or repair it for you. HETAS is recognised by the government as a quality scheme and anyone registered with them is qualified to fit and work with solid fuel heating.
The Oil Firing Technicians Association (OFTEC) is for engineers who work with oil burning appliances and services. So, if you have an oil-fired boiler, it’s a good idea to hire an OFTEC engineer for any repairs, servicing or installation work.
If you have an electric boiler, then hire a qualified electrician or a boiler engineer with electrical skills who can comply with BS7671: Requirements for Electrical Installation. You might want to look for someone who belongs to an association such as the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) or the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC).
