Strictly speaking this is not a parure, but rather a collection of more or less matching Aquamarine jewels that were given to Queen Julian when she was heir to the throne.
Aquamarines belongs to the gemstone family of Beryls.
arine. Aquamarines are usually free of inclusions and possesses a
superior brilliance. The more intense the colour of an Aquamarine, the
higher its val Aquamarine stones comes originate mostly from
Brazil, Russia, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan Their colour can
range from pale blue to light greenish. For more than 50 years these particular pieces are often worn together and therefor we can describe them here as a Parure. 1. Tiara 2. Necklace 3. Earrings 4. Brooch
It all began with an Art Deco style tiara, made by Dutch Jeweller Kempen, Begeer & Vos with Diamonds and Brazilian Aquamarines. The tiara was an 21st birthday present for Princess Juliana from her parents in 1930. The tiara has a very distinct 1920's design. The bandeau base is mounted in platinum and has a stylised meander or greek key design pavee set with square cut diamonds and aquamarines and is topped with seven large briolette cut Aquamarines of superb quality. These bandeau style tiaras were often worn on the forehead as Princess Irene did in the1960's. 2. Necklace Also for her 18th birthday, Princess Juliana received a Belle Époque / Edwardian style (1900-1920) diamond and aquamarine necklace set in white gold from her grandmother, Queen Dowager Emma. This stunning and versatile piece was purchased from Jeweller J.C. Burnier in The Hague.
The long necklace is what was called a Sautoir and contains
7 large square aquamarines and has 1 rectangular aquamarine
pendant. All of the
highest quality. The long necklace * can be shortened and partly turned
into a bracelet.
Princess Juliana wore the shortest version of the necklace for a portrait
as early as 1930.
Queen Juliana received the
earrings of briolette cut Aquamarines as
a wedding present from Princess Armgard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, her new
mother in -law in 1937. The Aquamarines match the ones in the
Art Deco tiara wonderfully well.
The
large brooch in Art Deco style with a large rectangular Aquamarine set
with smaller baguette cut Aquamarines was a wedding present, from
Prince Bernhard. Queen Juliana wore some of these individual pieces for some time before she decided to wear them together as a parure for the first time in 1946 when she visisted Sweden. Since then, these Aquamarine jewels are very often worn together. Princess Beatrix and her sisters have worn these jewels many times when they were younger.
The
last time Princess
Beatrix wore all these jewels together as a parure was at the State
Banquet in Denmark in the 1980's. Since then only Princess Margriet and
Princess Maxima have done so. |
