Synopsis:
Jesus, and old antique dealer living with his wife and granddaughter, discovers one day a mysterious device supposed to hold the key to eternal life.
Horror-on-Screen Review (by Raoul):
Cronos is the first full-length feature film by Mexican master storyteller Guillermo Del Toro. As for many of his later movies, this one is horror-themed but not really your usual horror movie. Instead, Del Toro’s tale is more of a dark poesy, yet one with colorful and complex characters.
Cronos is about a relic that transform the main character into a vampire. But apart from a few interesting transformation scenes, there is no real horror scene in the movie. Instead, it focuses on the psychological aspect of the transformation and the relation of the grand-father with his daughter. If you like family drama, you are in for a treat here. If however you are, like me, a horror-hound, you might find that one to be a little disappointing. Most of those watching Cronos nowadays will probably have seen Del Toro’s other films before (The Devil Backbone, Mimic, Hellboy) and will know what I’m talking about. If that is the case, you will find that the story in Cronos is good but maybe not as great and less spectacular than in Del Toro’s later movies. The movie is also very slow paced, but that is easily compasated by a set of characters who, on the opposite, are very interesting. The germ-free freak /villain and his dumb son, wonderfully played by Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Alien IV, Blade II), are unforgettable.
A great film if you do not expect too much horror and are familiar with Del Toro’s universe.
